With the intention of following in the footsteps of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, the Winklevoss twins, who are American businesspeople, have made a sizeable investment in Real Bedford FC.
Together with Peter McCormack, a cryptocurrency podcaster who purchased the club in 2021, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who hail from New York, are now co-owners of Real Bedford, a team that competes in the Second Division of the Southern League Division One Central conference.
As the eighth-tier team continues to make progress, the identical twins, who are also the co-founders of the cryptocurrency exchange company Gemini, have a long-term goal of assisting the team in reaching the Premier League.
Rob Sinclair’s team has achieved back-to-back promotions and is currently in first place in the Southern League Division One Central table with 21 wins out of a possible 27. This comes after the team displayed outstanding performance in their first season, which was in 2022/23.
Now, according to Sky Sports, the Winklevoss twins have officially completed a cash investment in the club that was worth £3.58 million. Sky Sports claims that the final documents were signed on Wednesday after full terms were agreed upon.
In April, when it was announced that a deal in principle had been reached, Tyler Winklevoss made it abundantly clear what his goals were. “We share in Peter’s deep conviction in bitcoin and its ability to supercharge RBFC’s quest to make it into the Premier League,” he said. “We are a testament to Peter’s passion for bitcoin.”
“Since our first conversation more than two years ago, Peter has proven he knows how to build a successful club and we’re excited to work alongside him as co-owners.”
In the course of explaining why they made the decision to invest, Cameron Winklevoss also mentioned that they were going to establish the very first football club that would be powered by bitcoin.
“Through our bitcoin investment, Real Bedford’s balance sheet will be fortified with the hardest money in the observable universe, giving them advantages on and off the pitch,” he wrote back in the month of April.
It is my hope that Real Bedford will serve as a model for how small businesses and underdogs all over the world can establish a foundation of financial stability and give their mission a boost. To the extent that governments all over the world continue to inflate their currencies, businesses that are powered by Bitcoin will only continue to grow stronger.
Then he continued, “Peter has a powerful WHY.” As someone who has lived in Bedford for their entire lives, he has had the dream since childhood of bringing a Premier League team to Bedford. He has a mission that is both clear and genuine. Builders who have a compelling “why” are our favourites.
In addition to the success of the men’s team, Real Bedford Ladies are also well on their way to achieving promotion to the third tier of women’s football.
