Alexander Isak: Explaining ‘Solidarity’ Payment in Liverpool’s £130m Newcastle Deal

Aside from Marc Guehi’s potential, Liverpool has wrapped up a superb summer of business by buying Newcastle United and Sweden talisman Alexander Isak for a reported £130 million. A small portion of the sum, £5 million, has been referred to as a’solidarity contribution’ – but what does that mean for each club?

Fabrizio Romano, GIVEMESPORT’s senior transfer journalist, has stated that Arne Slot and his entourage are likely to break the Premier League transfer record, with Isak, 25, joining Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, and Jeremie Frimpong.

In 2024/25 alone, Isak, largely recognized as one of the top attackers in the world, scored 27 goals across all competitions. As a result, joining the English champions looks like a home run for all parties concerned, even if Newcastle were hoping to keep him after the summer.

Isak’s Move from Newcastle Utd to Liverpool: The ‘Solidarity Payment’ Explained

Although the all-round deal for Isak is worth £130 million to Eddie Howe’s Magpies, who have replaced the Swede with Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, Liverpool will only pay £125 million due to a £5 million’solidarity contribution’, as reported by the press.

Given that it is a term rarely used in transfer negotiations, many supporters on X (previously Twitter) are perplexed by the reports of Isak’s long-awaited move from Newcastle to Liverpool this summer. A supporter wrote:

“What does this “solidarity” stuff mean? I had never seen it before, but now I’m seeing many journalists cite it in this transaction. Basically, Newcastle claims they received £130 million, but Liverpool claims they “only” spent £125 million?

According to Liverpool.com, the £5 million solidarity payment is reserved for clubs that supported the sluggish centre-forward’s development between the ages of 12 and 23. That includes AIK Fotboll in his own country, Borussia Dortmund, and Real Sociedad, the club from which Newcastle acquired him.

Each club will earn a minor sum as part of Isak’s transfer. Given that Isak was 22 when he arrived at St James’ Park from Spain in the summer of 2022, Newcastle may gain from the solidarity payments.

Isak, who has 16 goals in 52 appearances for the Swedish national team, started his career at AIK. He progressed through the club’s youth divisions before joining the senior squad. Dortmund, a German club, then expressed interest in signing him.

He moved to Germany in 2017 and spent the second half of the 2018/19 season on loan at Willem II; however, it was with Real Sociedad that the now-25-year-old established himself as one of the most exciting strikers in the game.

Isak then joined Newcastle three years ago and scored 62 goals in 109 appearances for the club in northeast England, which grew from strength to strength under Howe’s steady leadership and well-drilled squad.

According to the article, the extra £5 million comes from a bonus Newcastle planned to pay Isak. However, the striker agreed to forego the fee so that his move to Anfield could be signed, sealed, and delivered before the transfer window closed.
