Alan Shearer has immediately responded to Anthony Gordon’s red card against Liverpool. The Monday night game between the Reds and Newcastle was expected to be a tense affair, especially since the saga surrounding Alexander Isak has dominated the clubs’ transfer activities in recent weeks.
The hosts dominated the first half hour without scoring, and were stunned when Ryan Gravenberch scored before Gordon made a harsh charge on Virgil van Dijk, which was initially given a yellow card but a VAR intervention saw Simon Hooper reverse his decision. And now Shearer has spoken his thoughts.
Shearer reacts to Gordon’s red card.
Shearer, who was photographed at St James’ Park, took to social media to criticize Gordon for the challenge. He wrote on X:
“What a dumb challenge, man. “It is a red card all day.”
The dismissal frustrated more than simply Shearer, as Jamie Carragher and Thierry Henry both commented on it during Sky Sports’ half-time coverage.
“In our day, that may be a foul. “Possibly a yellow, but not a red,” Henry said before criticizing the England international.
“Why are you doing this to yourself? I do not comprehend. It is too distant to approach him. You understand that it is too distant to approach him. He gets carried away with what has been going on, and I understand why. But you cannot deny that it a red.”
Carragher would then add that Gordon and his teammates would be even more frustrated as a result of the former Everton player’s impact on the match.
“He was the best player on the field by far. They’ll be kicking themselves. Not because they are trailing 1-0, but because of the red card. There was always a chance someone would depart today. There was a banner in the crowd that read ‘go at them.'”
Cameras also revealed the depth of Van Dijk’s damage as a result of the tackle, with stud marks visible down the Dutch defender’s calf, which appeared to be the writing on the wall for Gordon before VAR intervened.
