Alan Shearer issues a strong verdict on the Newcastle United vs Sunderland derby, describing the performance as “pathetic”.

Alan Shearer has criticised Newcastle for their ‘pathetic’ Tyne-Wear Derby performance on Sunday.

Newcastle took the lead early on as Anthony Gordon capitalized on an early Sunderland mistake to put the Magpies ahead.

Eddie Howe’s team were unable to build on Gordon’s sixth league goal of the season, as Chemsdine Talbi scored after a goalmouth scramble to tie the game.

Malick Thiaw’s apparent Newcastle winner was ruled out late on, while Brian Brobbey scored Sunderland’s second in second-half injury time, giving Regis Le Bris a 2-1 victory.

Sunderland has now won both games against Newcastle this season, having defeated them 1-0 in December.

After Newcastle suffered their sixth home league defeat of the season on Sunday, Shearer took aim at the squad.

“A pathetic, weak, lazy, limp second half from Newcastle again,” wrote Shearer on his official X account.

As a result, Newcastle dropped behind Sunderland in the Premier League standings.

The Black Cats, who have won two of their previous three league games, are now one point ahead of Newcastle in 11th place with seven games remaining.

Eddie Howe’s reaction

It’s been a challenging week for Eddie Howe and the Magpies.

They not only lost to archrivals Sunderland, but also suffered a humiliating 7-2 Champions League defeat at the Nou Camp.

Following the game, Howe told talkSPORT: “I didn’t like the second half. First half, I thought we played well. Probably not our finest, but there were some great moments. However, we struggled in the second half.

“Our technical game came apart. I felt we made it too transitional. I think we looked fatigued in the second period. Too many individual blunders, which I believe are categorized by the goals we conceded as being extremely terrible.

“We have to absorb all that feeling now, which is not nice.”

He continued, “Today in isolation is quite painful. It’s painful for us, especially for our supporters, who are the first to come to mind.

“I’m very devastated that they didn’t leave here pleased and fulfilled. I understand how much the fixture represents.”

unsavory Tyne-Wear sceneries

The Tyne-Wear Derby was marked by unpleasant incidents both before and during the game.

Before the game at St. James’ Park, a small group of Sunderland fans broke away from the police escort and approached a big crowd of Newcastle supporters.

Fights broke out between the two groups of fans, and the Sunderland team coach was hit with bottles and cans.

After receiving reports of suspected racial comments from the audience, referee Anthony Taylor had to pause the game.

The Premier League Match Centre stated that the match between Newcastle United and Sunderland was delayed during the second half due to a report of racist abuse directed toward Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida. This is consistent with the Premier League’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol. “The incident at St James’ Park will be fully investigated.”We fully support the player and both clubs. Racism is unacceptable in sports and society. We will continue to collaborate with stakeholders and authorities to make our stadiums an open and inviting environment for everyone.”

A Newcastle spokeswoman stated, “We are aware of a report of racism made by a visiting player towards someone in the crowd during our Premier League match versus Sunderland.

“Our stance is clear – we do not tolerate discrimination of any form.”We will cooperate with the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and guarantee that any personnel responsible are identified and held accountable.”
