Adam Armstrong explains why he left Southampton and joined Wolves.

Adam Armstrong has explained why he decided to leave Southampton FC and join Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Premier League’s lowest club.

Southampton have had an exceedingly disappointing first season back in the Championship, with the South Coast club unable to mount a prolonged push for promotion or the play-offs throughout the current season under Tonda Eckert and his predecessor, Will Still.

Saints are presently 14th in the second division rankings after 30 games, despite recording their second victory in three games last time out with a 2-0 win over Stoke City.

Eckert’s side is now seven points behind the top six with 16 games remaining, but their chances of securing a second promotion in three seasons via the post-season lottery have been significantly hampered by Armstrong’s decision to leave the club after four and a half years after joining from Blackburn Rovers.

While some may criticize his decision to transfer to Molineux given Rob Edwards’ side’s present position at the bottom of the Premier League table, despite a recent upswing, the former England youth international has explained why he made the move.

Adam Armstrong speaks out on £7 million Wolves-Southampton FC trade agreement.

It was first reported on January 20th that Armstrong was considering a fresh challenge away from Saints, who signed him for £15 million in the summer of 2021 following his excellent tenure at Ewood Park.

The striker was then linked with Championship promotion hopes Middlesbrough and Wrexham, but Saints had also stated their position, which was that they hoped their primary asset would stay a member of Eckert’s side for the time being.

Armstrong’s time at Southampton came to an end with less than 18 months left on his contract, having made 174 appearances and scored 43 goals, the most famous of which came against Leeds United in the 2024 play-off final.

It has also been revealed that his transfer to Wolves includes a further £2m in add-ons, whilst the former England youth international explained why he put pen-to-paper on a three-and-a-half year deal in WV1.

“Being at a club for so long was enjoyable, but it was time for a change. “My family and I are very excited to get up here and sort things out,” added Armstrong.”I have nothing but good things to say about Southampton because they made me into a man since I first joined when I was younger.”I’m extremely grateful to them for allowing me to come here and advance my future. Molineux is fantastic. “The stadium is nice for opposing players,” he said.A good atmosphere, a large pitch, and just fond memories, although not for me because we’ve always lost here, but I’m excited.”

Southampton FC will hope Cyle Larin is an adequate Adam Armstrong substitute.

Despite Armstrong’s departure, the Saints were able to keep Cameron Archer, who hopes to return to form soon.

Eckert will also hope to have found a sufficient alternative in Canadian international Cyle Larin, who joins on loan with a buyout clause from RCD Mallorca.

Larin has 30 goals in 87 international appearances, and he will look to translate those figures into Championship play to help Southampton gain some much-needed momentum.
