‘I’ve just said something that’s true’ – Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou baffled by criticism of his ‘always win things in second year’ comment

Ange Postecoglou expresses astonishment at the backlash about his remark about ‘usually winning things in the second year’ following the derby loss.

Postecoglou’s remark sparked criticism.
An Australian asserted that he spoke the truth.
Spurs lost 1-0 in the North London derby.
Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur have began the 2024/25 season poorly, obtaining only four points from four Premier League matches. Last Sunday, Spurs had a 1-0 loss to arch-rivals Arsenal in the North London derby, resulting in the club’s descent to 13th place in the league standings.

Following the derby defeat, the Australian manager stated to Sky Sports, “I will amend my statement – I typically do not achieve victories; I consistently attain success in my second year.” No changes have occurred. The statement has been poorly received by the supporters, who condemned the coach for the presumptuous remark immediately following a loss to their staunch adversaries.

On Tuesday, during a pre-match news conference with the media, the Spurs manager defended his statement, asserting, “It’s remarkable, isn’t it?” I only articulated a reality. Should I just fabricate a story or assert that the event never occurred? Do you genuinely believe that I am exhibiting arrogance? I find it perplexing that individuals are exaggerating the significance of an issue. I am uncertain how to respond to a statement that is factual. I have just spoken a truth, which appears to have disturbed many individuals for whatever reason.

The Lilywhites will want to regain their winning form when they face Championship team Coventry City in the third round of the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
