Anthony Gordon expressed regret for his inability to score after receiving an assist from Trent Alexander-Arnold, while playfully suggesting he would not repeat the error in the future.
The 23-year-old Newcastle winger was included in the England squad that defeated the Republic of Ireland 2-0 in Dublin on Saturday evening, despite having little participation with the Three Lions at Euro 2024.
Gordon squandered an opportunity in the lead-up to England’s opening goal, which was ultimately converted by Declan Rice.Jack Grealish secured a second goal shortly thereafter, ensuring a decisive victory for temporary head coach Lee Carsley.
Gordon was skilfully identified by Alexander-Arnold, positioned at right-back, but the former Everton player was denied by Caoimhin Kelleher in the home goal.
Gordon pledged to capitalise on Alexander-Arnold’s passing prowess by scoring in the subsequent match during his post-game interview with ITV.
Regarding the opportunity, he stated: “I ought to have scored, so I have much to improve upon.” I am indebted to Trent for that pass. I will compensate for it.
Although Gordon and Alexander-Arnold may collaborate more frequently for England in the forthcoming months, there was a moment during the summer when it appeared they would compete against each other at both the club and national levels.
In June, it was revealed that Newcastle and Liverpool were in discussions on a transfer that would have sent Gordon to Anfield, as his club aimed to adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Gordon, a lifelong supporter of the Reds, had a breakdown in negotiations, prompting Newcastle to finalise alternative agreements to comply with the regulations.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe unequivocally said last month that the winger was not available for transfer, asserting: “I’ve observed Anthony return in a favourable condition.” Particularly over the preceding week, he experienced a notably brief training interval before to the inaugural match.
“We included him because he is a game-changer; younger players acclimatise more rapidly, but I believe he has returned to peak form this week.”
I have been involved in the sport for too long to make assertions on Gordon’s potential transfer to Liverpool. I can assure you that both I and the club will use every effort to retain our top players, but I cannot predict the future.
