Mikel Arteta, the assistant manager of Manchester City, is on the verge of taking over as Arsenal’s new manager, and he may immediately raid Pep Guardiola’s team.
According to The Mirror, the Gunners are getting closer to signing Arteta, and it’s critical that the inexperienced head coach enlists the help of a seasoned assistant manager.
Rodolfo Borrell, the assistant coach at Manchester City, who has naturally worked with Arteta at the Etihad Stadium, is reportedly the top target according to the same report.
Here are five things you might not know about Borrell, the Spanish player who might follow Arteta to North London, in case you’re an Arsenal fan.
1. Despite having little playing experience, Borrell gained recognition as a coach at Barcelona by leading their development teams all the way up to the Under-18 level.
2. The 48-year-old managed Greek team Iraklis for three games in 2008, winning two of them while serving as a caretaker manager.
3. Borrell briefly returned to Barcelona before Rafael Benitez enticed him to Liverpool, where he worked for four years as the Under-18, Under-23, and academy managers.
4. Borrell has been with City for almost six years, demonstrating his versatility once more. He started out as the Head of Scouting and International Relations before taking on the role of assistant coach to Pep Guardiola.
5. His football acumen has been acknowledged, and he’s even been linked to the early development of players like Raheem Sterling at Liverpool, Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas, and Andres Iniesta at Barcelona. Arsenal will be hoping he can do the same for their players.
