Wrexham have announced that director Humphrey Ker would step down from the club’s board and as a trustee of its foundation after five years with the Championship team.
Actor and comedian Ker was instrumental in bringing co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac to the club in 2021, inspiring the latter to explore football club ownership before considering Wrexham as a prospective proposition. Since Reynolds was hired by Mac, the three has supervised the club’s meteoric rise through the football pyramid, from non-league to competing for promotion to the first flight.
However, in a statement made on Friday, the club revealed that the 43-year-old will be leaving his roles.
“Wrexham AFC confirm that Humphrey Ker is to step down from the board of Wrexham AFC and as a trustee of the Wrexham AFC Foundation after a highly successful five-year long association with the Club,” the statement said.
“Humphrey played a crucial role in bringing Co-chairmen Rob Mac and Ryan Reynolds to the Club back in 2021 as it transitioned from the Wrexham Supporters Trust to the new ownership.”He also appeared in the Welcome to Wrexham documentary series, which was a huge success and helped propel both the Club and the City of Wrexham to global prominence.
“Humphrey has been an integral part of the growth of the Club these past five years and has shared at close hand the three consecutive promotions and our journey from the National League to the Championship,” it continued.The club wishes to thank Humphrey for his devotion and commitment to the Club, the Foundation, and the local community. We wish him all the very best for his future professional and personal career.”
Ker admitted that “watching from a distance” was the best decision for him right now, saying, “Working for and representing Wrexham AFC and the wider town has been the greatest honour of my life.”
“I am pleased of the role I played in the Club’s incredible journey, both on and off the field. The way the Club has changed and is now structured has made it increasingly difficult for me to make a constructive contribution, thus, as sad as I am to be departing, I believe watching from a distance is the best option for me.
“I will always be a fan, and I wish the club, community, and supporters continued success. I want to thank everyone who has made me feel so welcome.
Reynolds and Mac paid tribute to the 6ft 7in director, saying: “Humphrey has been a key piece of the Wrexham story from day one, and his kindness, humour, and height will be missed but never forgotten.”
Ker’s departure comes less than three weeks after Wrexham announced the appointment of former Newcastle United manager Steve Nickson as the club’s new sports director.
In a significant show of intent for the Welsh club, Nickson has been brought on board to work closely with head coach Phil Parkinson and his coaching staff as they strive for Premier League promotion this season.
Nickson spent 15 years on Tyneside and has been head of recruitment since 2017, having previously spent 12 years at Blackburn Rovers.
