Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has guaranteed his team will return “fighting and punching” following the international break.

It hasn’t been the finest of weeks for the Blades. After being booted out of the EFL Cup by League Two club Fleetwood Town, the Bramall Lane-based side slumped to a third defeat in four league appearances after Stoke City came from behind to win 2-1 on Saturday. It leaves them 18th with nine points through eight games.

It’s been a busy opening six weeks of the season, with Sheffield United playing the maximum 11 games that Championship sides that made the EFL Cup third round have had to play, and fatigue is definitely setting in following four consecutive weeks of Saturday/Tuesday fixtures.

Numerous head coaches are anticipating the forthcoming three-week break, no more so than Chris Wilder.

Sheffield United have lost some close games this week. In league play, they’ve lost two straight games to nil, one thanks to a 90th-minute Raul Jimenez goal against Wolves, and Stoke’s goals on Saturday were both wonder strikes.

In an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield, Chris Wilder stated that his team’s performance is “on the right track,” although some Blades fans disagree.

“Not a single Blade believes we should be ‘top 2 or 3’ with this squad. But we do want some effort and a system that works for the guys we have, rather than the same garbage week after week. “As for ‘we’re on the right track’… 🤦🏻‍♂️,” a Sheffield United fan said online.

“Right track?? What is he on?” one fan inquired, while another added, “Right track? To what the sack, Wilder?”

We also had one shot on goal in open play, Chris, and we haven’t played well in a single game this season. You’ve had a complete preseason, brought your guys in…..” was also one of the remarks, and others are even challenging Wilder’s status at the club.

“I love you, Chris, but maybe it’s time. “I can’t remember the last time we were the better team, and it certainly wasn’t this season,” said another supporter.

Sheffield United must improve their performance levels following the international break.

Sheffield United may have gone unbeaten in their first six games in all competitions before this run of four defeats in five, but the change in form might be attributed to their opponents seizing their chances while ahead, whereas other teams did not.

As previously stated, the Blades are easily ranked last in terms of goal-scoring attempts. 25 of their 66 total shots have come from set pieces, leaving just 41 from open play.

What’s more troubling is that, while Sheffield United hasn’t posed much of a danger forward, they haven’t been very defensively solid either.

Only Charlton has allowed more attempts on goal. Only Bolton Wanderers and Derby County have allowed more on-target shots, and their xG difference is now the fifth worst in the league.

So, not only are Sheffield United 18th going into the international break, but their underlying figures don’t seem to indicate they’re unlucky to be there, which will be troubling.

The Blades will require a reaction following the break. Hopefully, the three-week break will allow for a more refreshed performance against Lincoln City on October 10.
