Birmingham City are apparently ready to beat Derby County to the signing of Union Saint-Gilloise forward Mohammed Fuseini on an initial loan arrangement.

According to Flashscore, Birmingham will also include an option-to-buy clause in their negotiations with the Belgian Pro League club as they seek to boost Chris Davies’ squad ahead of Tuesday’s 11 p.m. transfer deadline.

It had been viewed as a somewhat frustrating summer for the West Midlands outfit and their supporters, as after only a handful of summer signings had been made in the lead-up to the Championship season, Davies’ side had started with successive draws against Sheffield United and Bristol City before being knocked out of the EFL Cup in humiliating fashion by Brentford.

However, the attitude in B9 has returned to one of optimism following their first league win of the season against fellow play-off contenders Wrexham in North Wales on Friday night, thanks to a brace from center-back Phil Neumann.

Birmingham’s attacking department has been reshuffled throughout the summer transfer window, with supporters urging the club to add more depth in such positions following the departures of Ibrahim Osman and Kyogo Furuhashi, while Marvin Ducksch continues to attract interest.

However, with fewer than 48 hours remaining in the window, Davies may be ready to address one of those difficulties while also dealing the Rams a setback.

Several versatile targets, such Joe Gelhardt and Anis Mehmeti, have been connected with the Blues this summer, but after the former returned to Hull City, it was reported on Sunday that the Ipswich player is willing to fight for a spot in their Premier League team.

While Davies has spoken at length about Osman’s return from Brighton, the Midlands club is expected to finalise Fuseini’s original loan signing ahead of the transfer deadline, beating out former boss John Eustace, Derby, Troyes, and FC Lorient.

In order to complete the deal, the 24-year-old will soon undergo a physical at St. Andrew’s at Knighthead Park.

Derby have also been connected with a plethora of attacking possibilities to bolster Eustace’s squad following an injury crisis and a dismal start to the season, but it has now been revealed why Fuseini chose to transfer to B9 rather than DE24.

According to Flashscore, Birmingham’s chances of promotion were a crucial element in the agreement with the player, who has 15 goals in 76 appearances for USG since joining from SK Sturm Graz in 2024.

Although it remains to be seen whether Birmingham can acquire even more depth in creative areas, Fuseini, who missed a significant amount of last season owing to various injuries, would provide further depth to Davies’ centre-forward position.

As previously stated, Stansfield has played in a variety of positions rather than settling on one, and the Blues also have August Priske, who has started as the main focal point of the side’s attack this season following his January move and a successful pre-season, and summer recruit Luis Vazquez to call on.

Fuseini has already scored in this season’s Champions League qualifiers, and if the two-time Ghanaian international can match or better his 11-goal tally from two seasons ago, the Championship side will hope their Midlands rivals feel transfer regret after being linked with him earlier in the window.
