West Brom have made an excellent start to their 2026-27 Championship season, and more good news may be on the way thanks to James Morrison’s transfer update.

Some Baggies fans may not have expected such a spectacular start to the current season, with the maximum six points coming from two difficult games on paper: Norwich City away and Burnley at home.

Albion even fought hard against Newcastle United of the Premier League in the EFL Cup earlier this week, only to lose 3-2 at St. James’ Park, demonstrating that they will be a legitimate threat to their Championship rivals throughout the season.

Of course, there is still football to be played in the coming days, with West Brom taking on Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon and Charlton Athletic next Wednesday, but the transfer market will close on Tuesday, with clubs hurrying to complete deals.

Add-ons might increase the overall worth of the deal to £7.6 million, although this is dependent on realistic add-ons, as well as considerations such as West Brom returning to the Premier League, competing in European competition, and Collyer being capped by England.

Collyer, who has 13 senior appearances for the Red Devils, spent last season on loan at the Baggies, often coming off the bench after joining from Old Trafford, but he would spend nearly a month on the sidelines with a hamstring injury in October, and then he featured just three more times before being withdrawn after only 11 minutes against Birmingham City in November due to a’significant’ calf problem.

West Brom’s recruitment team has done some extremely clever business this summer, with the average age of the squad dropping substantially, and players like Harry Whitwell from the academy making a significant contribution.

There is still a need for extra personnel before the window closes on Tuesday, and they may need to prioritise their defensive unit.

Another right-back, Issa Kabore, was on the agenda in recent weeks to compete with Nolan Galves, but Wrexham swooped in and re-signed the Manchester City man on a permanent basis.

While George Campbell can cover in that area, the American is normally a center-back, and even in that position, the Baggies are short on choices, with Nat Phillips and Chris Mepham the only others available.

If Albion and Morrison can address that aspect of the pitch as a priority after the Collyer trade is completed, there will be some happy faces on The Hawthorns terraces on Wednesday night when Charlton visits.
