Charlton Athletic are ready to recruit Nottingham Forest defender Tyler Bindon on loan for the season as the club looks to address its current defensive injury issue.

Nathan Jones’ side has started the Championship season wonderfully, becoming one of three teams to win both league games thus far.

However, the Addicks’ backline is already down to the bare bones after three severe center-back injuries to start the season, two of which occurred 15 minutes into Wednesday night’s 5-1 EFL Cup defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Indeed, Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio, Charlton’s center-back partnership on Wednesday night, were forced off due to injury. With them both joining Reece Burke on the sidelines, Charlton had to move quickly to bring in reinforcements.

According to Pete O’Rourke, Nottingham Forest defender Tyler Bindon is expected to join Charlton on loan for the season, with the New Zealand international scheduled to arrive in the Valley for a medical shortly.

Bindon broke through at Reading in League One, becoming one of the club’s bright spots during a difficult period under former owner Dai Yongge.

Forest recognised his promise in February 2025, signing the center-back before allowing him to finish the remainder of the season with the Royals, who ended just outside the third-tier play-offs.

The 21-year-old is yet to make an appearance for Oliver Glasner’s side, having been loaned out again last summer to Sheffield United, who were led by former Royals manager Ruben Selles. He started the first four games of the Spaniard’s catastrophic reign at Bramall Lane, but was mostly overlooked until Chris Wilder’s return to the club.

An injury crisis at the back for the South Yorkshire club in December provided Bindon with an opportunity under Wilder, who was originally scheduled to terminate his loan the following month. The 21-year-old started all but eight league games in 2026, shining when given the opportunity.

Bindon now appears to be set for a second Championship loan, with Forest intending to offer him a more important role throughout the course of the season.

Charlton fans are quite excited about the idea of signing Bindon on loan. After losing a couple of center-backs on Wednesday night, they’d have taken any arrival, but in the New Zealand international, they believe they’ve found an upgrade.

One fan even stated that, if everyone is fully fit, Nathan Jones may have to reconsider the back-three formation due to the quantity of quality center-backs at the Valley.

But, ultimately, the biggest emotions are relief and pleasure in the club’s ability to respond fast to a scenario that they probably did not anticipate to be in with only four days left in the transfer window.

In terms of emergency signings, Bindon isn’t a bad choice. Mark McGuinness may have been unpopular with Chris Wilder at Sheffield United, but there’s a reason why the New Zealand international remained in the starting lineup after being returned last season.

Furthermore, the 21-year-old was loaned out to a team that had just lost the Championship play-off final after scoring 92 points during the regular season. It is clear how highly regarded Bindon is, and a difficult half-year in South Yorkshire will not change that.

With Nathan Jones conceding that the injuries to Koumetio and Sichenje will take longer than weeks to heal, and the latter’s knee injury not looking promising, Bindon will be able to step in and retain the quality that the Welshman wants from his backline.

The Addicks return to play tomorrow, hosting out-of-form Preston North End, hoping to make it three wins from three in a Championship season for the first time since 1992/93.
