Sheffield Wednesday have failed to keep Nathaniel Chalobah at the club.

Charlton Athletic have announced the signing of the 31-year-old as a free agent, after his contract with the Owls expired earlier this summer.

Following David Storch’s ownership, the Yorkshire club is now rebuilding its first-team roster.

Arise Capital is the new owners of the League One club, and they have implemented considerable changes both on and off the pitch.

Henrik Pedersen remains in command of the first-team squad, but he now has a few new faces to work with.

Sheffield Wednesday have signed a dozen players, including the return of Barry Bannan, but have failed to retain Chalobah at Hillsborough.

However, the Addicks have confirmed the 31-year-old’s permanent signing to Nathan Jones’ squad for the upcoming season.

After his contract with West Brom expired, the midfielder joined Sheffield Wednesday during the summer transfer window of 2024.

He appeared in 29 league games for the club over two years, scoring twice and assisting once.

Chalobah battled with injuries during his time at Hillsborough, starting only 11 games in the Championship since joining from the Baggies.

Charlton will be hoping for a more continuous time of availability, as the London club looks to improve on last season’s 19th place finish.

The second-tier club has disclosed that Chalobah has signed a one-year contract that would keep him in the Valley until June 2027.

Nathaniel Chalobah is an excellent addition for Charlton Athletic.

Chalobah will bring lots of Championship experience and talent to Charlton and will be a relatively inexpensive signing due to his free agency status.

He has the potential to be an excellent addition for the London club, but only if he can stay fit throughout his one-year contract.

It is a setback for Pedersen’s team that they were unable to sign him to a new contract, as he could have had a significant impact in League One.

However, the Owls now have other midfield options and should be able to cope without him, especially because he has never had a sustained period of injury-free games in the last two years.
