A fresh Charlton Athletic update has been revealed, with an EFL owner making a claim regarding a potential takeover.

Darragh MacAnthony claims that Charlton Athletic will have no shortage of possible investors after the club was put up for sale.

The Guardian revealed earlier this week that the present owners, Global Football Partners (GFP), have hired Oakwell Sports Advisory to seek new funding for the Championship club.

SE7 Partners, a GFP subsidiary run by Gabriel Brener, finalised the buyout of the London company three years ago.

They have overseen Nathan Jones’ promotion back to the second tier and are ready for their second season at this level.

However, the Valley’s ownership situation is once again uncertain, as a takeover would result in its fifth owner in six years.

Charlton are also not the proprietors of their home stadium, which Roland Duchatelet still owns despite selling his stake in the team.

Darragh MacAnthony advances Charlton takeover claim.

MacAnthony, the current owner and chairman of Peterborough United, claims that Charlton has a lot of untapped potential, which might make it a much more valuable asset in the future.

He believes that the owners have earned the right to sell for significantly more than the £15 million they spent for it, and that the Addicks have a lot going for them in terms of enticing potential purchasers.

“They pay their bills, they got their club into the Champions League; it’s a fantastic football club,” MacAnthony told Talksport.’

“This is an excellent opportunity for someone to get in there.

“In recent years, football clubs have grown in popularity, especially in the United States.

“I don’t think they’ll have any trouble obtaining investors for it.

“This is another, not-sleeping giant, but a significant club, Charlton.

“I grew up watching Charlton play in the Premier League year after year.

“In terms of facilities, the academy, all of those things, and a large catchment area.

“And it’s one of the last clubs in London, so you’re probably paying under £100 million for it, which is a steal.

“What would Charlton Athletic be worth in 10-15 years’ time? If that’s true, I think it’s exciting for Charlton fans.

“And, again, the people who bought it and took it to where it is deserve to make a few quid because they’ve done a good job.”

Charlton has experienced several ups and downs under their ownership in a short period of time.

Supporters were successful in removing Duchatelet as owner in 2020, but he remains in control of the Valley, complicating any prospective takeover.

SE7 Partners may also seek investment rather than a full sale, in order to preserve stability while competing farther up the Championship table.

Charlton Athletic’s Championship Return

Last season, the London club ended 19th in the standings, and they hope to improve on that in the following year.

Jones’ side was six points clear of the relegation zone, thanks in large part to a solid first half of the season.

This summer, the Addicks have signed five new players, including Karlan Grant’s return to the club.

Charlton have also signed Danny McNamara, Millenic Alli, Ivan Mesik, and Billy Koumetio, with the transfer market open until September 1.

Charlton are a club with a lot of potential.

Charlton fans have every reason to be concerned about a prospective ownership change, especially given how difficult it has been for the club to maintain stability in recent years.

However, now that they are established in the second tier, the Addicks may attract a higher calibre of investor.

They also benefit from the fact that they are situated in London, which will undoubtedly pique investors’ interest.

While there is no assurance that a new owner will bring about positive improvements, there is a good likelihood that additional investment will help the club rather than drag it down.
