Under Tonda Eckert, Southampton’s goal for the upcoming season is to be promoted back to the Premier League.

The German was a key player in the Saints’ elimination from the competition as well as their ascent to a play-off spot in the previous season.

The Football Association has charged the 33-year-old for his involvement in the espionage incident that destroyed the team’s prospects of promotion.

After defeating Middlesbrough 2-1 in the semi-finals to clinch a spot in the play-off final, the Hampshire club was found guilty of violating the EFL’s policy against listening in on rival teams’ training sessions.

Southampton received a four-point deduction punishment for 2026–2027 after they acknowledged three instances of breaking the regulations.

However, given that the play-offs now include two extra teams, the Championship team will still be optimistic about their ability to contend for promotion the following season.

In the wake of the espionage incident that destroyed Southampton’s chances of promotion last season, Eckert has disclosed that he has been having trouble with his personal safety.

The 33-year-old has discussed how challenging it has been and acknowledged that he was told not to drive himself anyhow.

He said, via Kicker, “Yes, it could no longer be handled without the police,” in response to the question of whether he had received any death threats as a result of spygate.

“I don’t want to go into specifics, only this: I was told to sit at the back of the automobile instead of driving myself going forward.

That was really challenging.

“No coaching course can prepare you for this kind of situation.

“There is no instruction on how to respond when you are unexpectedly required to take the back seat due to security concerns.

“As I mentioned, it was really challenging.”

Eckert is still in charge of Southampton’s first team for the time being, although it’s unclear what punishment the FA will impose on him following the association’s allegation against him last month.

As he gets his team ready for the upcoming season, the German coach is threatened with a football ban.

After their initial loan stints at St. Mary’s last season, Southampton has finalised the permanent acquisitions of Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin.

Lewis Dobbin, who came from Aston Villa, and George Long, who left Norwich City as a free agent, have also signed contracts with the Saints.

Before the market closes for the rest of the year, the Hampshire company has until September 1st to finish any outstanding business.

On August 16, the first weekend of the new season, Eckert’s team will play Watford in the league.

However, he has done well to speak out on this subject, and it is not a justification for him to feel insecure or receive death threats.

The 33-year-old will now be hoping that the beginning of the new season will put an end to this entire story because it is unacceptable for anyone to have placed him in this situation.

Even though he still faces the possibility of being banned from football, that is nothing compared to how he would have felt during the summer after receiving death threats.
