Chris Wilder is preparing for his first full season back in charge of Sheffield United, and he’s already making an impression on the squad this summer.

This time last year, the Blades were in the midst of a difficult pre-season, with a lot of change occurring following their play-off final defeat to Sunderland in May.

With Ruben Selles in charge, Sheffield United took a different approach to player recruitment, highlighting a variety of profiles, including AI-based signings and younger, less experienced players with potential to improve at Bramall Lane.

When the project failed under the Spanish manager and the Blades returned to Wilder, much effort was required to correct the transfer transaction that summer, as the popular manager returned to a virtually unrecognisable group from the one he had left just months before.

He set to work very immediately, bringing in players he preferred, such as Patrick Bamford and Jairo Riedewald, and ending the loan periods of Louie Barry and Ben Godfrey in January. Nils Zatterstrom, Christian Nwachukwu, and Ehije Ukaki, three of Sheffield United AI’s summer acquisitions, were also sent away midway through the year.

And, in the midst of his first summer window back at Bramall Lane, Chris Wilder is continuing to reshape the squad after last summer’s transactions.

Sheffield United have not shied away from replenishing their centre-back position this summer, with Chris Wilder looking for a new addition to partner Japhet Tanganga in the heart of the defence.

Zatterstrom and Mark McGuinness were both signed last summer, with the latter joining the backline in the present and the former being profiled for the future, with AI alerting the Blades recruitment team to his availability.

Zatterstrom, on the other hand, made no appearances after moving from Malmo and was loaned out to Genoa in January, while McGuinness played just 25 times in the Championship last year, getting his only extended run in the team under Wilder in the final six games of the campaign, when the season was effectively over.

Chris Wilder wants to let them both go this summer, and Australian international Harry Souttar is the ideal substitute. According to the Sheffield Star, the Blades manager believes they will get bids for both transfer-listed defenders.”I think they’ll take both,

” he added. “They’ve played or participated in preseason. They realise that, as do their representatives, and they are working hard on it. Nils, a young player, needs football.The attitude of the boys in pre-season has been great, but there are moments when decisions must be made.

They all want to play first-team football as well. Nils aspired to join the first team, whereas Mark was always eager to contribute.So, we’ll keep an eye on that. He didn’t play last season when he went out, therefore he has to play 23, 24, 25 games before the holidays. Then we can take a closer look at him rather than playing in our 21s in a league we win almost every season.

Wilder believes that Zatterstrom may have a future in first-team action at Sheffield United, but he appears to have been surpassed in the pecking order by Jamal Baptiste, who spent last season on loan at Rotherham United.

Meanwhile, McGuinness, who the Blades manager claims was signed for £5 million last season and has previously been sold for £10 million, requires first-team football, something the manager is unwilling to provide.

Mark has gone for five million, and I’m not sure how much we spent for him. “He’s gone for big money,” Wilder explained.He aspires to play first-team football. It’s pointless for him to be on a squad if he doesn’t see any opportunities to play. He needs to play, which is in the best interests of the club, me, and Mark.

When it was revealed last week that Sheffield United were looking for a couple of centre-backs after both McGuinness and Zatterstrom were declared surplus to requirements this season, Blades fans were ready to express their feelings.

It was almost unanimous that the former Luton Town player should be let go, but Zatterstrom received more sympathy because the 20-year-old hasn’t been given much of a chance at Bramall Lane.

“Just keep Zatterstrom and avoid wasting money on a guy we don’t need. Clearly, money is short; why waste it on a guy who already matches the profile?” one admirer asked.

“Thank heavens people can now see McGuinness cannot defend,” wrote one admirer of the 24-year-old, while another concurred, noting, “McGuinness is one of the worst we have had. I would love to see the scouting report on him.”

If Sheffield United can replace them with someone like Souttar, the Blades’ fanbase will be very grateful. However, with the new campaign commencing in less than two weeks, supporters will anticipate deals to speed in the coming days.
