West Brom have had a productive start to the transfer window as they prepare for their first full season under James Morrison.

After Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay’s appointments failed poorly, the Albion management resorted to the former player to maintain the club in the Championship last season.

Under Morrison, the Baggies were transformed as he simplified the approach and made the club difficult to beat, collecting 18 points from 12 games to ensure their survival in the league.

As a result, it came as no surprise when owner Shilen Patel chose Morrison as the new head coach, with the focus now shifting to upgrading the team, and with Matt Ingram, Jimmy-Jay Morgan, and Barney Stewart on board, Albion have done some good business.

West Brom wants Southampton striker Cameron Archer

Even though Morgan and Stewart have expanded Albion’s attacking options, Morrison is still looking to strengthen this area of the pitch during the transfer window.

TalkSPORT reporter Alex Crook has stated that the Baggies are interested in Southampton’s Cameron Archer.

The 24-year-old has had a difficult few years on the south coast, having joined the Saints when they were a Premier League club in 2024, but scoring only two goals in his debut season.

However, Archer’s performance in the Championship did not improve much, as he only scored four goals in 30 appearances last season, several of which came from the bench.

Southampton may be willing to let Archer leave if a suitable offer comes in, as the former Aston Villa player is under contract at St. Mary’s Stadium for another two years.

Cameron Archer may benefit from a fresh start at West Brom.

Archer was highly regarded when he rose through the Villa ranks, and two impressive loan spells in the second tier with Preston and Middlesbrough demonstrated what he is capable of.

The England youth international was especially impressive at Borough, where he scored 11 goals and provided six assists in 22 appearances after joining in January 2023.

However, a move to Sheffield United in the Premier League did not work out, and as previously said, he has struggled at Southampton.

With that in mind, a new beginning would make sense for the player, and the opportunity to join West Brom, where he could play every week, could be just what he needs.

At 24, it’s far too early to write Archer off, and many will recall how sharp and dangerous he appeared while with North End and Borough.

Morrison has already helped a number of players at West Brom, and it would not be surprising if he could do the same with Archer. The possibility of the Saints man teaming up with Stewart is incredibly exciting for the Baggies, since they have a variety of strengths as a combination.

Whether this arrangement is financially feasible remains to be seen, and some may doubt Archer’s performance in recent years.

But, for the right price, it may be a gamble worth taking for West Brom, and, if things do work out, Archer could become a vital figure at The Hawthorns as Albion look to benefit from the new play-off system and strive for a top eight finish under Morrison.
