The truth behind Bristol City’s transfer pursuit of £2m-rated Wigan star emerges.

Bristol City are considering a move for one of Wigan Athletic’s most valuable assets ahead of next season, and there has been widespread speculation on social media that the Robins have already made a proposal.

The Latics have been involved in the League One relegation battle in each of the last two seasons, putting them at risk of losing some of its top players, who could be operating at a higher level.

Meanwhile, Bristol City secured a Championship play-off position in 2025 but failed to replicate that success last season, ending 12th, 11 points below the top six.

The West Country club has since signed former Lincoln City manager Michael Skubala, who is looking to develop his own squad at Ashton Gate this summer.

The truth behind Sam Tickle’s transfer has emerged amid speculations of a Bristol City offer

According to Football League World, Bristol City has joined Queens Park Rangers in the race to sign Wigan goalkeeper Sam Tickle.

Tickle has been a fantastic performer for the Latics, participating in all 138 League One games over the last three seasons while making some impressive saves.

The 24-year-old is a former England Under-21 international who improved his distribution past season, resulting in two assists.

Meanwhile, according to Patreon user Alan Nixon, Wigan could accept a fee of between £1.5 million and £2 million for Tickle this summer, despite Bristol City’s approaches.

Since then, reports have circulated on social media that the Robins are already planning to sign the guy with only one Championship appearance to his name.

Tickle made his Latics debut on the final day of the 2022/23 second-tier season, after they had already been relegated to League One, when he kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Rotherham United.

He has now demonstrated that he is capable of making the step-up back to the Championship, and Wigan’s departure would undoubtedly benefit Bristol City.

However, Wigan Today reports that Tickle’s present club has yet to receive a bid from the Robins for the 24-year-old.

Sam Tickle would be an excellent signing for Bristol City.

Bristol City have yet to make a bid for Tickle, but they are clearly interested in the goalkeeper, who once again demonstrated his talent in League One last season, despite the Latics’ problems at the bottom of the table.

If the Robins beat QPR to the Wigan academy graduate’s signature, they will gain a skilled shot-stopper who excelled when the Brick Community Stadium side met Manchester United in an FA Cup fixture in 2024.

Goalkeeper Radek Vitek, who joined Ashton Gate on loan from Manchester United and has since returned to his parent club, was one of the West Country team’s top performers last season.

Tickle’s Wigan performances over the years demonstrate that he would be an adequate substitute for Vitek, and he may have what it takes to assist Bristol City reach the Championship play-offs if Skubala completes the remainder of his transfer business well.
