The sooner the 2025/26 season is forgotten at Sheffield United, the better, and Chris Wilder has already laid the groundwork for a stronger season next season.
This time last year, the Baldes were nursing their wounds after a devastating defeat in the Championship play-off final against Sunderland, and they would make significant changes over the offseason.
Along with a new recruitment approach centred primarily on AI, there were significant dugout changes, as Wilder was fired in favour of Ruben Selles.
While hindsight is wonderful, such selections are mostly the result of a disastrous season, in which the beaten play-off finalists lost all six of their games in all competitions under Selles, with recruits underperforming on the field.
In September, the upper management at Bramall Lane promptly returned to the fan loved manager, but the damage had already been done. Sheffield United were playing catch-up, and despite improving results and a possible late play-off charge after the new year, the Blades eventually ran out of steam, winning only four of their last 13 league games.
Chris Wilder discusses pre-season demands for Sheffield United this summer.

Chris Wilder has created a reputation at Sheffield United for having hard-working squads that dominate the physical charts.
Next season, with playing budgets likely to be reduced as the Blades embark on their first second-tier campaign without Premier League parachute payments since their 2018/19 promotion under Wilder, hard work will be required even more, as Sheffield United begins to fall down the pecking order in terms of having the financial clout to bring in quality players.
Chris Wilder, speaking to the Sheffield Star, believes that having a complete pre-season will help his team set standards quickly and strike the ground running, unlike when he returned in September and had to increase them during games. The Blades’ head coach emphasised the importance of pre-season not only for conditioning but also for conveying a clear message. That’s considerably more challenging during the season, when you have less time. During pre-season, you may establish a clear narrative and expectations for the group. In many ways, we are already doing so through meetings with the players who will be here, as well as conversations with all departments — medical, sports science, coaching, and psychology.
The Blades manager has warned that the next summer would be challenging and will require a significant increase in physical and mental preparation to start the season strong.Getting players in early and having a large group to work with is also vital. Wilder expressed confidence that the message will be received positively by payers. The good news is that several of the boys have previously worked with me, so they understand what’s coming and how we operate. “This is going to be challenging.”Players must prepare for this because we will increase the bar in a variety of areas.
A solid start will be vital for Sheffield United next season.

Sheffield United’s 2025/26 season was essentially a wash in the early going, with eight defeats in their first nine league games as Selles’ bad start carried over into Wilder’s first month.
That forced the Blades to play catch-up right away, and if they were to repeat their top-six finish from the previous season, they’d need to be nearly flawless for the next seven months of the season.
That simply cannot happen again at Bramall Lane next year if Sheffield United are to make a serious run at the revamped play-offs, which will be viewed as attainable even without Premier League parachute payments.
The longer Chris Wilder’s team is out of the top flight, the more difficult it will be to return. As a result, the focus this summer will be on putting in the work required to end their Championship status, something Chris Wilder will undoubtedly instill in them.
