Roy Keane will be keeping a watch on Southampton’s progress in the Spygate affair with Middlesbrough in recent weeks.

It has dominated the English football landscape in recent weeks, after an intern was sighted at Boro’s training complex. Finally, Southampton were accused of spying on Middlesbrough ahead of the first leg of their play-off semi-final at The Riverside.

It turns out that the surveillance was centered on Boro’s plan for Finn Azaz, and that unfair advantage is one of the reasons they were removed, along with the fact that they violated norms that had been in place for a few years.

It was discovered that official restrictions on spying on rival football clubs were implemented following the initial scandal involving Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa in 2019. Leeds were fined £200,000 over the Derby County incident, and the EFL modified its rulebook in response to Bielsa and co.

Roy Keane will keep an eye on Taylor Harwood-Bellis’ position with Southampton.

Southampton faced charges after admitting to spying on Ipswich Town, Oxford United, and Middlesbrough. That is why they will begin next season with minus four points and have been eliminated from the play-off final.

In their defense, it was recently revealed that Southampton manager Tonda Eckert believed he was permitted to spy, but he may now be in further problems with the FA and faces an unclear future at St. Mary’s.

The centre-back recently celebrated Charles’ winner against Middlesbrough by approaching Aidan Morris and making a binoculars-like hand gesture. That moment has aged terribly since Southampton was eliminated from the play-offs.

In fact, according to The Daily Mail, Harwood-Bellis has been obliged to apologize. He is engaged to Roy Keane’s daughter Leah and stated on Thursday that he would not have conducted the mocking celebration if he had known how serious the situation was.

On Instagram, he wrote, “I’d also like to put on record that, had I known the gravity of the situation, I would never have done what I did on the pitch.” In the time, it was meant to be a little of fun in a circumstance that we as participants were unaware of.”

How much interest in Taylor Harwood-Bellis this summer?

Harwood-Bellis will almost probably draw Premier League interest this summer since he appears to be capable of performing at that level. He is composed in possession, physically strong in both boxes, and has demonstrated the leadership traits that many top-flight clubs need in a modern centre-back.

However, his actions during Southampton’s recent ‘Spygate’ scandal may cause some clubs anxiety. While enthusiasm is vital, criticizing Middlesbrough players following the incident comes across as unnecessary and unpleasant, rather than inspiring leadership.

There is clearly a narrow line between showcasing personality and demonstrating poor judgment. Harwood-Bellis is undoubtedly outspoken and prominent in the dressing room, but Premier League clubs will also evaluate mentality and professionalism when making significant investments in players.

The episode may make some wonder if the Southampton star is the ideal type of figure to construct a long-term story around. Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned here, and his soon-to-be father-in-law may be reminding him of it as well.
