Sheffield United have been issued a warning over a potential transfer decision involving Manchester City and Kalvin Phillips.

Sheffield United will seek to finish their Championship season on a high note after returning to winning ways last weekend.

The Blades staged an incredible comeback against play-off chasing Hull City at Bramall Lane, after falling behind in the first five minutes to a strike from ex-Blade Oli McBurnie.

However, in the final five minutes of the game, a Gustavo Hamer penalty tied the scores, before an instinctive finish from Danny Ings in the 88th minute ignited pandemonium in the Steel City fans.

It was a pleasant result for manager Chris Wilder, who had been under fire from the Sheffield United fans following a six-game losing streak, but a valuable three points can help ignite a strong finish to the season with only four games remaining.

Undoubtedly, the Sheffield United leadership will be thinking about what their roster will look like next season now that the Blades are out of relegation danger.

One of the main issues will be whether to make Kalvin Phillips’ loan from Manchester City permanent, with Wilder saying they want to bring the midfielder back to the club next season despite his suspension and injuries.

Phillips has only appeared in three games for the Red and Whites due to a knee injury sustained after being sent off against bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday.

Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield: “He’ll have a lot of people after him (Phillips).”

“We’ve brought in a really good pro. Due to an unfortunate accident, he has not had the opportunity to play as much as he would have liked.I approached him and expressed our interest in working with you, your agency, and your parent club.He clearly checks all the boxes in terms of personality and traits, both on and off the pitch.

“If there’s an opportunity, I’m sure we’ll try and explore that one.”

With this in mind, FLW’s Sheffield United fan pundit has suggested how much the Blades should spend to get Phillips to the Steel City on a permanent basis.

Sheffield United warned not to ‘spend over the odds’ for Kalvin Phillips.

Speaking with Football League World, Sheffield United fan pundit Jimmy (AKA Blades Ramble) admitted he would like to see Kalvin Phillips stay at Bramall Lane for next season, but insists the club must be “sensible” with their finances and not “pay over the odds” for the midfielder as they lose their Premier League parachute payments this summer.

Jimmy asked FLW, “Kalvin Phillips, how much should we pay permanently? To be honest, I wouldn’t say much.

“That doesn’t call into question how good a player he is, has been, and may be again. I believe he would be an excellent acquisition for Sheffield United, but it must be the appropriate financial agreement.

“We have to be realistic as a football club; we can’t expect these types of deals to come in for enormous money when we don’t have parachute payments.

“I absolutely anticipate us to transfer a load out in the summer, which will obviously be contingent on takers, and I expect us to work with a smaller team because it has been bloated this year; it requires more balance and leaders.

“I would include Kalvin Phillips in that category owing to his experience. He clearly commands respect with his reputation, and I believe that if we keep him fit, he would be a tremendous asset for us, but that is offset by the risk of financial obligations, so I would not pay too much for Kalvin Phillips, but I believe he can contribute on the side.”

Sheffield United should use the Kalvin Phillips, Manchester City scenario to negotiate a cheap deal.

While Sheffield United will not be able to spend significant money next season due to financial constraints, they may still be able to get Kalvin Phillips on a very affordable deal given his current predicament at the Etihad Stadium.

The midfielder is plainly surplus to requirements under Pep Guardiola, and Manchester City must be eager to offload the 30-year-old at any cost, as his move to the blue half of Manchester was never going to work.

Phillips certainly feels at home in Yorkshire, and while he hasn’t played as much as he would like, he still has the potential to be a great success in the second tier and help the Blades fight their way up the Championship standings next season.

The main concern will be the amount of competition for his signature, but given the club’s insistence on his return, Phillips may pick Bramall Lane.

Provided the deal is relatively affordable, it appears to benefit all parties, with Phillips then able to get regular game time and demonstrate that he hasn’t lost his magic on the Championship stage.
