8 Plymouth Argyle players that will leave at the end of June, including Joe Edwards, has been revealed

Plymouth Argyle are in for an intriguing finale to the season, with Tom Cleverley’s team still chasing a spot in the top six of League One heading into the final few weeks.

This year’s campaign has been difficult for the Pilgrims, who were in third place by the end of November. However, since December, only Lincoln City has gained more points, and Home Park is now dreaming of a Championship comeback.

As a result, Plymouth’s starting division for the 2026/27 season remains unknown, and with all of the attention currently focused on the field, conversations concerning new contracts for those whose contracts expire in the summer have been placed on hold.

Aside from loan acquisitions Owen Dale, Wes Harding, and Alex Mitchell, these seven Argyle players are expected to leave at the end of the season, barring a late contract extension.

Joe Edwards

Joe Edwards, 35, has become a fixture at Home Park during the course of his nearly seven-year tenure there.

The versatile right-sided defender, who can also play midfield, has made over 275 appearances for the Pilgrims, helping them to promotion from League Two and League One, as well as relegation from the Championship last year.

Injury ruined his season last year, but he’s recovered well in League One, starting every game in Plymouth’s rapid rise up the third-tier table.

With Edwards approaching 36 in October, there will be a talk about his contract status throughout the summer. There is no questioning his influence at Home Park, but it has to be seen whether Tom Cleverley and co. wish to take a different approach away from him.

If he does go, you can bet he’ll end up somewhere else, with recent claims tying him to several League One and Two clubs.

Joe Ralls

Joe Ralls’ 15-year affiliation with Cardiff City ended this summer, and he signed a short-term contract with Plymouth in November. He extended his contract to the end of the season in January, but suffered a hamstring injury just a few weeks later.

As things stand, the 32-year-old will not play again between now and May 2, although he might rejoin the squad if the Pilgrims make the play-offs.

Regardless, his good influence in such a short period of time, along with his championship experience, should make extending his current contract a no-brainer this summer.

Brendan Galloway

Brendan Galloway’s time at Home Park has been quite inconsistent. This is his fifth season with the club, and he has only played 109 games in nearly five years. This season has been one of his most fruitful in terms of appearances, but he has also seen some difficulties.

He made five consecutive starts in January and scored two goals, but just as he was getting going, a hernia operation sidelined him for a month and a half.

The Pilgrims have demonstrated that they can produce results without the 30-year-old on the pitch, so unless the price is right, the former Everton player may find a new home this summer.

Conor Hazard

Conor Hazard joined Plymouth from Celtic on a three-year contract ahead of the club’s return to the Championship in 2023.

Over that period, he was in and out of contention in his first season, and then last year and this season, injuries have prevented the Northern Irishman from gaining a significant run in the side.

The 28-year-old started the season with a knee ailment and was sidelined in March due to a calf issue. Despite this, Plymouth have looked safe with him in goal, and he has preserved more clean sheets this season than he did in his previous two Championship campaigns combined.

Plymouth should be delighted to extend Hazard’s stay in Devon, but will be wary of the keeper’s injury history.

Luca Ashby-Hammond

From Plymouth’s number one to the backup shot-stopper. Unfortunately, Luca Ashby-Hammond has not had the same success in goal as Hazard this season.

The 25-year-old joined the Pilgrims on a one-year contract after impressing on trial over the summer, and was thrust into action owing to Hazard’s injury. As previously said, Plymouth’s season began poorly, and their goalie did little to improve their defense.

His brief return to goal in January saw the Pilgrims concede seven goals in three games, and while he did ultimately keep his second clean sheet of the season away at Wigan Athletic in March, he was back on the bench when Hazard returned.

Plymouth may be looking for a better backup keeper, especially if Hazard’s injury problems persist.

Ayman Benarous

Ayman Benarous hasn’t gotten the new start he was expecting for at Plymouth after leaving Bristol City in the summer. The 22-year-old had not played since the 2021-22 season due to several ACL injuries.

The midfielder did get some opportunities early in the season, but he quickly fell out of favour, to the point where he was deregistered from the League One squad heading into the second half of the season.

He was eventually reinstated due to Ralls’ injury, but other from a few random unused replacement appearances, he has been largely forgotten.

Benarous only signed a one-year contract with Home Park, and he could be on the move again as he attempts to get his promising career back on track.

Zak Baker

Zak Baker, an academy product, has yet to make his professional debut for the club, despite appearing in various competitions this year, particularly while Hazard was out injured.

This season, the 21-year-old shot-stopper has been loaned out to nearby clubs Tiverton and Plymouth Parkway.

After signing a new one-year contract last summer, the same could be on the table again this offseason, especially if he wants to stay as Home Park’s third-choice goalkeeper.
