Coventry City manager Frank Lampard was adamant that his team should have been awarded a second-half penalty in their 0-0 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday afternoon.
On a difficult afternoon for the Sky Blues, they believed they should have been awarded a penalty in the second half after a cross from the right looked to contact Tayo Adaramola on the arm.
The Sky Blues, who went into the match knowing a victory would put them on the edge of promotion, turned the throttle in the second half in chase of an opening goal, but they were up against a stubborn and resilient Wednesday team.
The Owls defended valiantly in the East Midlands, blocking and kicking everything their opponents put at them. Lampard, on the other hand, believed his team should have been granted a penalty shootout opportunity.
“It’s a penalty,” Lampard emphasized. “It’s a penalty, just like it was against Hull and Derby, and it’s been acknowledged.
The three games and three penalty decisions against will be added to the list.”
Lampard, who will be hoping to secure his side’s place in the Premier League when they face Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park next Friday night, requiring only three more points from their last four games, felt his side did enough to win the game, but he praised Wednesday’s defence.
“We obviously created enough to win the game, but we didn’t quite do it,” he said. “You must credit the opposition for making things difficult for you.
However, when a team has nothing to gain, there is also nothing to lose. I believe they have a manager who is highly motivated and striving to accomplish his work as best as possible.
“So they were always going to make it as hard as they could, and, unfortunately, we couldn’t get a breakthrough, even with the possession and the crosses and the chances that we had.”
