Added by James Pennington on March 29, 2026 at 4:10 PM GMT+1. Coventry City owner Doug King has issued an update on Carl Rushworth’s status, as the Sky Blues look to maintain the Brighton and Hove Albion loanee beyond this season. Coventry has had a terrific season, with one foot in the Premier League and seven games remaining. The Sky Blues surged out of the blocks at the start of the season, led by former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard, and despite a few of bad patches of form subsequently, they have mainly kept their position at the top of the table. With the likelihood of Premier League football growing by the week, preparations for the summer window have already begun, with a strong emphasis on the goalkeeper position. Carl Rushworth arrived on loan from Brighton last summer to replace the injured Oliver Dovin, and the 24-year-old has impressed at the CBS Arena, prompting the club to reportedly pursue a permanent contract for him this summer.
Coventry owner Doug King offers an update on Carl Rushworth’s transfer speculation.

With the Sky Blues’ intention to sign Rushworth permanently this summer on clear for all to see, owner Doug King has issued an update on the keepers’ transfer rumors. With Dovin suffering a long-term injury in the later stages of last season, a new acquisition between the sticks was a priority in the summer, and Rushworth was identified as a key target, with King noting, “It’s on record that I tried to buy Carl. And it obviously did not get done. Brighton placed a high value on him and did not want to sell him at the time. He is still a member of their team. So he’ll return on June 30, hopefully after a promotion season with Coventry, where he had a terrific experience, we allowed him to exhibit his talents, and he helped us achieve where we wanted to go. And we’ll see how it goes, right? “I mean, he’s one of the players who aren’t contracted to Coventry City, but he’s worked as if he was, and that’s what I needed him to do.” And I believe we’ve provided an excellent platform for him to showcase his abilities at the top of the Championship and the league for the majority of the season.” Of course, King will be one of the first people in this circumstance to caution against getting ahead of themselves, and he has stayed relatively quiet about Rushworth’s prospective return this summer, although declaring unequivocally that he wants him back. Coventry’s prospects of re-signing the Englishman grow tenfold if they win promotion, although Brighton’s stance on him is uncertain at this point, since it is possible that Fabian Hurzeler intends to keep him next year. In any case, the Sky Blues will press for Rushworth’s return this summer, and King will spearhead any potential move.
Carl Rushworth has excelled for Coventry City this season.
Rushworth has done an outstanding job since replacing Dovin in goal this season, and he is a major reason why Coventry is on the verge of promotion at this point. According to FotMob, Rushworth’s 6.9 averted goals this season are the best among goalkeepers in the Championship, ahead of Stoke City’s Viktor Johansson and Derby County’s Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
It’s hardly surprising that Coventry would want to re-sign him for their return to the Premier League next season. Rushworth has demonstrated his skill on loan with Walsall, Lincoln City, Swansea City, and Hull City, but has pushed his game to the next level at the CBS Arena. The only stumbling block in Coventry’s summer negotiations may be Brighton’s willingness to sell, given they have Dutch number one Bart Verbruggen, England’s recent call-up Jason Steele, and Birmingham City loanee James Beadle on their roster. Coventry will be praying Rushworth is not chosen as their key man for next year, as the 24-year-old represents probably the Sky Blues’ most vital addition this summer.
