Bristol City have sacked Gerhard Struber. Roy Hodgson has officially been appointed as the club’s new head coach, bringing a wealth of experience to Ashton Gate.

Gerhard Struber has been removed of his duties as Bristol City head coach, and former England manager Roy Hodgson has been appointed at Ashton Gate.

Bristol City have declared that head coach Gerhard Struber has been dismissed of his duties, with former England manager Roy Hodgson named as caretaker manager at Ashton Gate.

The Robins confirmed in an official statement published on Friday morning that Struber, who was appointed as head coach on a three-year contract last summer, and his assistant, Bernd Eibler, would leave Ashton Gate with immediate effect due to the club’s recent underperformance.

After 39 games, City sits 16th in the Championship, 10 places and 12 points behind the play-offs, having lost their past six games. During the run-up to the international break, the Reds were also knocked out of the FA Cup by League One’s bottom club, Port Vale.

With only seven games remaining this season, former Inter Milan, Liverpool, Fulham, and England manager Hodgson will take charge of the first team until the end of the season. The 78-year-old will meet with City’s players and staff on Monday ahead of their Good Friday trip to Charlton Athletic.

In a Friday morning statement, Robins CEO Charlie Boss expressed gratitude to Gerhard and Bernd for their efforts over the previous nine months and wished them well.Roy’s appointment is more important than the outcome of the next seven games. Throughout the rest of the season, he will assist us in establishing the club’s standards and principles, which will be required for future success.

“Roy is an extremely experienced coach who has accomplished and won at the top levels. “He will support me, our players, and our football staff to reach our full potential.”We are in the process of recruiting a sporting director who will have a direct say in the selection of a new permanent head coach.”

When asked about his hiring, Hodgson replied, “I have had great conversations with the board, and I am really excited by the opportunity to help until the end of the season. We will get straight to work and look for a positive performance on Good Friday.”

The Robins’ new sporting director, who has yet to be named, will be entrusted with finding a new permanent head coach before the start of the 2026/27 season. The individual appointed to such a position will also conduct a thorough evaluation of the club’s football operations.

Along with the move in the dugout, the Reds announced that technical director Brian Tinnion has been stripped of his first-team duties. The Robins’ technical director, a former City player and manager, will prioritize the academy pathway before the sports director conducts a review.Brian’s expertise is in player development, and we believe he is most suited to working with our younger players,” Boss said of Tinnion’s new role. “Developing the talent in our academy and ensuring there is a clear pathway to the first team is central to our plans.”
