Middlesbrough are facing competition from Burnley for a top-flight transfer, as Kim Hellberg provides the latest update on the situation.

With the Championship season coming to a finish, it’s safe to assume that some clubs in the league are already planning for life after the current season.

It has undoubtedly been an unforgettable season at the Riverside Stadium, with Kim Hellberg largely able to build on the positive start that the Teesside club made in its early weeks under Rob Edwards, prior to his controversial move to the Premier League’s bottom club, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

As a result, depending on how the coming weeks play out, the North East and West Midlands clubs may change spots in the footballing pyramid for next season.

And a new update has come on a potential transfer struggle that the Reds may face, and it includes another club that appears to be bound for the Championship.

Middlesbrough faces potential. Burnley FC battles for FC Augsburg star Robin Fellhauer.

Hellberg hasn’t made significant changes to his starting lineup or the entire squad since his arrival at the Riverside in late 2025.

Indeed, only four players were signed during his first transfer window as Boro manager thus far, with Jeremy Sarmiento from Brighton & Hove Albion standing out, while Joe Wildsmith, Finley Munroe, and Leo Castledine have added depth while playing limited minutes.

However, with Hellberg’s first pre-season on Teesside looming large, and Middlesbrough preparing for a Premier League campaign, speculation about potential moves has begun to emerge.

Having said that, Sky Deutschland reports that the Reds are one of several English clubs following the status of FC Augsburg’s versatile midfielder, Robin Fellhauer.

According to the publication, the 28-year-old, who is noted for his versatility, was previously on Burnley’s radar, and that following the Clarets’ initial interest, they may face a transfer war with other English clubs, including Middlesbrough.

Fellhauer has only been at the Bavarian side since the start of the season, when they activated a high six-figure release clause to beat out FC Koln and Werder Bremen for his signature on a four-year contract from FC Elversberg, where he was previously club captain.

He has 29 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring twice and playing in a variety of positions, including right and left midfield, as well as his native position in the centre.

His two goals have also come while playing on the right flank against VfL Wolfsburg and, most recently, RB Leipzig on March 7th, with Augsburg currently tenth in the Bundesliga with seven games remaining.

Robin Fellhauer might be an asset for Middlesbrough if they finalize the FC Augsburg transfer deal.

If Middlesbrough wins the transfer battle, this prospective addition might be quite valuable to them.

Fellhauer’s versatility makes him similar to Hellberg’s current team members Alan Browne, Aidan Morris, and Tommy Conway, who are frequently asked to play multiple roles depending on the opposition.

However, the contract may also be contingent on whether they are a Premier League team when the transfer window reopens in two months; otherwise, the German may move elsewhere.
