Blackburn Rovers are still fighting their way out of relegation trouble and avoiding the dreaded League One trapdoor at the end of the season.
Rovers went two games unbeaten last weekend, following up their 2-1 victory at Millwall with a goalless draw at Ewood Park against fellow promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough, earning another point that could be critical to guaranteeing their Championship safety.
That result moves Blackburn into 19th place in the Championship with 43 points, but the pressure remains high due to West Brom’s superb recent success, which has included a four-game undefeated streak under interim manager James Morrison.
With seven games remaining in the season, Blackburn is only four points above the dotted line, and the relegation battle is anticipated to go down to the wire.
Everyone associated with Rovers will be hoping that the club can fight their way back to survival by May. After that, the club will have to decide on the futures of a number of their players, with contracts ending and interest emerging from rival teams ahead of the next summer transfer window.
With this in mind, FLW’s Blackburn Rovers fan commentator has discussed which players he believes Rovers will lose this summer.
Blackburn Rovers expected to lose Sondre Tronstad, Balazs Toth, and Todd Cantwell this summer

According to Football League World, Blackburn Rovers fan pundit Simon Middlehurst believes Sondre Tronstad, Balazs Toth, and Todd Cantwell will all leave Ewood Park this summer, with the trio’s contract situations posing a challenge for the Lancashire-based club to resolve while they still don’t know which division they will play in next season.
Simon told FLW: “Three guys come to mind. The first person is Sondre Tronstad. Obviously, he’s out for the rest of the season, but his contract expires at the end of the season, and it’s widely documented that his family hasn’t settled in the UK as well as they had anticipated, so I believe he’ll leave at the end of the season to return to Norway or Scandinavia.
Also, Balazs Toth. Another player whose contract expires at the end of the season. While at Blackburn, he broke into the Hungary squad, and there’s no doubt he’ll want to carry that as well. If we are relegated, he will want to play at a higher level to boost his chances of making the national squad as well.
“Todd Cantwell is another player whose contract will expire at the end of the season. We’ve also offered him another contract. I don’t believe he signed it either, so that’s another one.
“But with Cantwell, he’s on quite high wages for Blackburn, so if he did go, that would be a big chunk of the wage bill we can save on.”
Blackburn Rovers must prepare themselves for key summer exits.

Blackburn Rovers will have to prepare for some first-team departures this summer, with some coming as a greater blow than others.
Sondre Tronstad’s injury will be devastating, as the 2024-25 Player of the Year was such a dependable and consistent figure until he required a full ACL reconstruction at the beginning of March, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Given Tronstad’s refusal to discuss an extension because, according to head of football operations Rudy Gestede, the midfielder’s future is “not in this country,” it is almost certain that he will play his football away from Ewood Park when he returns to full fitness.
Meanwhile, Todd Cantwell appears to be another player set to leave Ewood Park, and one whom Blackburn fans may be relieved to see go after a string of injury concerns.
The former Norwich City player has missed 14 games this season owing to various niggles, scoring only four goals – poor numbers for one of their more creative offensive outlets.
You could argue that Balazs Toth’s future is dependant on whether Blackburn stays in the second tier, with the 28-year-old seemingly needing to play Championship football at the very least to continue making national appearances on a regular basis.
Of course, the amount of exits for Blackburn will depend on whether the team plays in the Championship or League One next season, but these three players appear to be the most likely to leave regardless of the outcome.
