Carlos Carvalhal shares his thoughts ahead of his return to Sheffield Wednesday.

It’s been a difficult few years for Sheffield Wednesday and its fans to overcome, but the Owls are gradually moving in the right direction off the pitch.

The team has been mishandled for several seasons under the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, who eventually threw the club into administration very early in the 2025/26 season.

Off-field constraints have limited the Owls’ ability to sign players, impeding whatever progress they had hoped to achieve this season.

Sheffield Wednesday’s relegation from the Championship has already been confirmed this season, and they will be attempting to return to the second division of English football in the 2026/27 season.

There hasn’t been much to look forward to for Sheffield Wednesday fans in recent years, but there is one event that will pique their interest after this year’s campaign concludes.

Earlier this month, Sheffield Wednesday announced that tickets for the Sheffield Wednesday Community charity match were on sale, adding that former manager Carlos Carvalhal and players from the 2015/16 play-off campaign would return to participate.

The game is scheduled for Saturday, May 9th, and it appears like the club’s supporters will have a fantastic day to look forward to.

Carlos Carvalhal sent a message to Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

Carvalhal urged Sheffield Wednesday fans to get tickets ahead of his return to Hillsborough Stadium.Hello Sheffield Wednesday supporters. I’ll be at Hillsborough on May 8th and 9th, together with my players, staff, and a large number of supporters. I hope you’ll be there too!”

Sheffield Wednesday fans will remember the 2015/16 season for the right reasons, despite the fact that they fell agonisingly short of winning promotion to the Premier League.

The Owls finished sixth in the Championship league that season before defeating Brighton & Hove Albion over two legs in the play-off semi-final.

However, they were barely defeated by Hull City in the final at Wembley Stadium, with Mohamed Diamé’s goal depriving Sheffield Wednesday of the opportunity to return to the top division for the first time in 16 years.

Carlos Carvalhal flourished in English football with the Owls

Carvalhal has a relatively long management resume, but he certainly caught the eye while in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, his first term in English football.

He took over as manager of Sheffield Wednesday in 2015 and led them to the Championship play-offs in both of his first two seasons, and while both of those play-off campaigns were unsuccessful, many people praised the 60-year-old for his contributions to the club.

Carvalhal departed Sheffield Wednesday by mutual consent in December 2017, and went on to take over Swansea City. That tenure with the Swans did not last long, as he left after the club was relegated from the Premier League in 2017/18.

The former Owls manager was most recently in charge of Portuguese team Braga, his third term with the club, and it is unclear where he will next manage.

Sheffield Wednesday are ready to return to play on Friday, April 3rd, when they face Stoke City in what is sure to be a tough test for them, with the Owls winless since September, their only win of the 2025/26 season coming against Portsmouth.
