Major twists in the Sheffield Wednesday takeover: James Bord’s bombshell, Mike Ashley’s contact, and a statement from Storch that might change the game.

Sheffield Wednesday have already had an eventful week, with the club’s relegation confirmed on Sunday, and now all attention is focused on the off-field situation and finding a new owner.

The Owls have been under administration since October 2025, and during that time, there have been major departures, terrible on-field results, and, eventually, the end of their Championship tenure after this season concludes.

As the search for a new face in the boardroom continues, Henrik Pedersen will be hoping to move his team into positive territory and finish the season on a high note.

Following a new twist in the proceedings on Wednesday, Football League World has looked at the latest developments regarding Sheffield Wednesday’s acquisition.

James Bord’s takeover offer for Sheffield Wednesday fails.

According to Alan Nixon, a consortium led by James Bord failed to finalize a buyout of the Owls after spending roughly £4 million on the club during their term as preferred bidder.

In a statement, they said to Sheffield Wednesday supporters:

“To all the long-suffering followers of this magnificent Club, we regret that we have decided not to pursue our bid to be your new custodians. We’ve enjoyed watching Wednesday from afar for many years. It is a Club whose greatness has been tarnished over the years by careless owners who have forgotten or deliberately ignored your passion, history, and value. “You deserved and still deserve better.

“When the opportunity to be a part of your future chapter presented itself, we jumped at it and, in good faith, began the purchasing process. We have maintained professional, transparent, and productive communication with the administrator, EFL, and IFR through our great team of advisers.Unfortunately, due to the club’s history of mismanagement and catastrophic underinvestment,

our sizable binding proposal is no longer justifiable. Our advisers conducted extensive due diligence over the past two months, resulting in a binding bid that is no longer justifiable. As widely reported, we have spent over £4 million to help run the Club over the last two months and, after careful consideration,

have decided that we cannot continue to do so because the exclusivity agreement we signed allows only a small amount to be removed from our offer – regardless of the outcome of our analysis work. We understand that this will be a great disappointment to those who had anticipated that the ownership dispute would be resolved quickly, and we sincerely apologize. “We made this decision after careful consideration.

We’d want to make one final point. We are lifetime football fans who have had the opportunity to travel the world watching the sport we love. Sheffield Wednesday fans are the most enthusiastic we’ve ever seen.We hope whoever picks up this baton appreciates you as much as we did. We hope kids grasp the importance of investing in your team, stadium, and neighborhood. Just one of those three types of expectations is insufficient.

We know the rest of your season will be difficult, as will the next, but you will return to your former greatness, and when you do, we will cheer you on.”

Other parties remain interested in Sheffield Wednesday, including Mike Ashley.

While Bord’s proposed buyout failed, Rob Dorsett has stated that a number of other groups are still interested in owning the Owls.

According to his report, at least three parties have approached Sheffield Wednesday’s administrators on the announcement of the failed offer, and the process of finding a preferred bidder with exclusivity will begin anew. Bord’s consortium won exclusivity on December 24, and just over two months later, the Owls are back at square one.

Mike Ashley is one of many who have expressed an interest. Dorestt has disclosed that the former Newcastle United owner has been in contact with the Owls since the announcement of Bord’s attempt to purchase the club, but his previous offers were lower than others.

Ashley and the other interested parties have already demonstrated that they have at least £50 million in funds to complete the purchase and move the club ahead in the next years, following a decade of false promises and troubles under the former owner, Dejphon Chansiri.

The Storch family is interested in owning Sheffield Wednesday.

On Tuesday evening, just hours before Bord backed out of the Sheffield Wednesday purchase, David Storch issued a statement stating that he and his family remain interested in owning the club.

It continued as follows (via Rob Staton): “We remain incredibly passionate about the opportunity at Sheffield Wednesday and seeing the club return to its former glory.”We wish the preferred bidder well throughout the process, but we are ready to jump in if the opportunity arises again. We are all disappointed by the relegation, but we wish the club well as they complete the present season.”

As the struggle to buy Sheffield Wednesday heats up once more, it would not be surprising to see the Storch family make a new offer in the coming weeks.
