Newcastle United expects Anthony Gordon to stay with the team despite Liverpool’s interest in him.
Last month, as Newcastle made an effort to adhere to the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules, Liverpool made an inquiry on Gordon’s potential availability. Newcastle’s valuation and their desire to keep the player meant that the clubs were unable to move the negotiations forward.
Liverpool is still interested in Gordon, but Darren Eales, the chief executive of Newcastle, has stated openly that he believes the 23-year-old will stay with the team through the summer.
When asked if he thought the club will keep Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes, and Alexander Isak during this transfer window, Eales said, “Yes.”
However, it has been stated that Gordon would be uncomfortable with Liverpool’s interest because he has always supported the Merseyside team and would be excited about the possibility of a transfer. Eales, nevertheless, has voiced optimism about the winger’s potential to have a big Tyneside season.
He went on, “Everyone involved is a professional, and this is the nature of the industry where there is conjecture.”
“Eddie, who knows what Anthony is like, will bring Anthony back into the team. He will have a chip on his shoulder, and for us and for Anthony personally, he might not have gotten as many minutes as he could have in the Euros.” We all know what kind of person he is.
“In terms of his singular focus, he is among the most driven professionals I have ever encountered.” For him, this year is important. He was outstanding the previous season, so with the team we have put together this year, there is a real chance he can go to the next level.
Gordon, who spent time with England at the European Championships in Germany, will rejoin the Newcastle team later this month. Gordon played just one short stint as a substitute for England in Germany, even though he finished the 2023–24 season with 12 goals and 11 assists for Newcastle.
As we saw last season, Anthony has the potential to be a very dangerous player, so from a personal perspective, it was disappointing that he was not given more opportunity, Eales said. “He was one of the Premier League’s main attacking threats the previous season.”
“We also saw Eddie’s growth with him; even Anthony admitted that when he moved halfway through the previous season, it took him some time to get used to his new environment.”
But we also saw Eddie’s biggest strength, and the reason he is such a successful club manager, is his ability to develop players. His regular interactions with the players on the pitch are the cause of this.
“That is a tactical, physical, and psychological viewpoint.” Consequently, Anthony is just one of our many tools, which is what drives our zeal.
“We have a great deal of excitement over the talent we possess. The emphasis will be on the remaining window and the opportunity to further bolster and improve the squad, as I already mentioned.
Thanks to the removal of the £70 million loss from 2021 from the calculations for the following year and the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to comply with PSR before the June 30 deadline, Newcastle will have more money to spend this summer and improve the team.
