A new update on Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford’s future has emerged, and it will put Championship club Southampton on red alert.
According to Football Insider, the England international has resurfaced as a potential target for Newcastle United if they decide not to make Aaron Ramsdale’s current loan move from Southampton permanent at the conclusion of the season.
Such events come after Trafford expressed his personal dissatisfaction with a lack of gametime upon his return to the Premier League winners after negotiating a deal from Burnley, where he helped Burnley win promotion from the Championship at the end of last season under Scott Parker.
Fresh James Trafford, Newcastle United transfer links arise, with Southampton and Aaron Ramsdale element cited.

Trafford has recently become one of English football’s most highly rated homegrown goalkeepers, having experienced two strong loan periods with Bolton Wanderers in League One was on loan from the Citizens before transferring to Turf Moor for a reputed £19 million as the Clarets returned to the Premier League under the direction of former Manchester City cult hero Vincent Kompany.
Despite a frustrating first season in East Lancashire, Trafford became the subject of transfer interest from Newcastle, before staying at Burnley and breaking two remarkable Championship records en route to promotion, including the fewest amount of goals ever conceded in a second-tier season (16) and the longest number of consecutive clean sheets in the division (12), as they went on to be pipped to the title by Leeds United on goal difference after achieving
The 23-year-old appeared to be on his way to St James’ Park when Manchester City agreed to re-sign him for at least £27 million.
As a result, the Magpies decided on a loan move for Ramsdale, who was one of several high-earning players who left St. Mary’s following the South Coast club’s disastrous relegation season, in which only 12 points were gained.
However, both Trafford and Ramsdale have not had the seasons they had hoped for after making their respective transfer moves, with the duo making only 25 appearances combined across all competitions, with the former serving as Pep Guardiola’s understudy to Gianluigi Donnarumma at the Etihad Stadium.
Trafford, who made his fifth start since October in Saturday’s 2-0 FA Cup victory against Salford City, said that the season has not gone as planned. It is the fact, and I must give it my best attempt. This is the scenario I am in. We train every day, but making saves is really exciting.”
Newcastle are reportedly preparing a new bid for his services if Eddie Howe does not trigger Ramsdale’s option-to-buy clause, however the amount linked with such clause has yet to be disclosed.
Southampton may be interested in the James Trafford saga for several reasons.

Southampton, of course, has faced an intriguing situation this season with their goalkeepers’ union.
After starting the season with Gavin Bazunu in goal, the Irishman was quickly replaced by Alex McCarthy, who was later replaced by Daniel Peretz, who has had mixed results since being loaned in from Bayern Munich for the second half of the season.
Prior to Bazunu’s loan move to Stoke City, where he has since been injured, Trafford was extensively connected with a loan move to both the Saints and Leicester City ahead of the transfer window, but the transaction fell through.
As a result, it appears that the only option for Saints to retain Trafford’s services would be to reclaim their top-flight position, and they are now two points outside the play-off places with 14 games remaining.
