Portsmouth fears FA punishment after suspected criminal actions in Southampton’s game at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth are concerned that their handling of the heated south coast derby with Southampton could result in heavy penalties from the Football Association.

The two rivals drew 1-1 at Fratton Park on Sunday, their first league meeting there in over 14 years. However, off-field incidents may have serious implications, with the club facing punishments such as a fine – or even a point penalty.

In a statement made on Sunday evening, Portsmouth acknowledged that various incidents within the stadium are being investigated as criminal. A ball boy needed medical attention, and a staff member suffered burns after a pyrotechnic item was hurled from the crowd during the second half.

There was also a pitch invasion when Southampton went ahead in the 57th minute. A supporter entered the field of play and was arrested. Police have announced that Richard Conaghan, 34, of Courtmount Grove in Portsmouth, has been charged with entering the playing area of a football match. He was released on bail and is scheduled to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on March 16. Authorities have also made two further arrests in connection with different incidents during the game.

Portsmouth has warned that any subsequent misbehavior may result in severe disciplinary action beyond cash penalties. Officials are investigating CCTV footage and encouraging anyone with knowledge to come forward.

In their official response, the club applauded the majority of supporters for creating a passionate and energetic atmosphere, applauding those who welcomed the heated local rivalry in a positive way. However, they were disappointed that a tiny number of people engaged in illegal behavior, which might endanger both themselves and the club.

The offenses included pitch encroachment and the hurling of objects and pyrotechnics into the field, both of which were described as dangerous and illegal. One explosive device sparked worry when it detonated noisily, injuring a child ball retriever and a staff member.

Portsmouth also referred to past FA proceedings, having been fined £50,000 in April 2024 for a pitch invasion under FA Rule E 21. This guideline compels teams to ensure that their fans behave responsibly and forbids violent, abusive, or unruly behavior, such as entering the pitch or throwing missiles. The FA had also given a warning about the club’s future behavior, which meant that further offenses could result in severe penalties.

The club made it clear that similar actions will not be tolerated in the future. Any spectators caught entering the pitch or throwing objects, whether in this match or in future games, may risk serious club punishments, possibly criminal charges, and football bans.

Portsmouth closed by expressing their pride in their fandom and dedication to ensuring a safe environment at Fratton Park, adding that players, officials, staff, and supporters all need safety and security during matches.
