Record, a Portuguese publication, has reported that Manchester United has submitted a final take-or-leave offer for Joao Neves, the Benfica wonderkid (page 15).

This summer, the Red Devils intend to enhance their defensive midfield department and have identified numerous candidates for the role.

Neves is one of them. Earlier last month, United unsuccessfully attempted to acquire him for £51 million. According to the Record, the club has since extended an offer of £59 million.

According to sources, this is the Red Devils’ final take-or-leave proposal; however, there is no indication that Benfica will contemplate severing ways with Neves.

Currently, the 19-year-old is subject to a £102m release clause in his contract, and Benfica president Rui Costa is resolute in his commitment to retain him for the 2024/25 season.

The possibility of a summer exit has not been entirely disregarded; however, it is alleged that the Primeira Liga giants would have to raise a minimum of £85 million in order to consider his departure.

United would make a statement by acquiring Neves.
Last season, the youth experienced an exceptional breakthrough campaign with Benfica. From the sixth position, he was exceptional and maintained his presence throughout the entire season.

Neves’ passing accuracy was 90%, and he won six duels per appearance, in addition to making two tackles. On average, he completed 62 percent of his take-ons and made 6.4 recoveries.

Neves has demonstrated a high level of maturation at the age of 19, and Costa has referred to him as a “born leader.”

United has the opportunity to make a statement by bringing him to Old Trafford; however, it may necessitate a significantly higher fee to incentivize Benfica to approve the transfer of the adolescent.

The Red Devils’ limited transfer budget may raise concerns regarding the likelihood of a renewed offer. They could focus on acquiring Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.
