Last week, ESPN NFL analyst Mina Kimes was joined by Kevin Clark of The Ringer on her podcast, The Mina Kimes Show featuring Lenny. The two experts each ranked the top-10 head coaches in the NFL. Clark placed Kyle Shanahan, the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, in sixth place, following Andy Reid, Bill Belichick, Mike Tomlin, John Harbaugh, and Sean McVay. Shanahan was ranked second by Kimes, who was only one point behind Reid.
The 49ers, of course, employed Shanahan prior to the 2017 NFL season. Shanahan has been instrumental in the Niners’ turnaround, which was previously in disarray due to a succession of poor front office/head coach hiring decisions made by CEO Jed York. Although the 49ers have undoubtedly encountered challenges during his tenure, they have also advanced to the NFC Championship game three times in the past four years, and they won the NFC Championship in 2019.
“I believe that the individual in question is the most exceptional offensive play-caller in the National Football League.” “He constructs machines that are largely quarterback-proof in a manner that is truly remarkable,” Kimes stated about Shanahan. “He has subjected every defence to torment since his arrival in the NFC West.” The value he provides as a play-caller is truly exceptional. I would select him if I were simply selecting a player to win a single game, following Reid.
Clark was evidently enthusiastic about Shanahan; however, his 52-46 win-loss record and absence of Super Bowl title were the primary factors that prevented him from achieving a spot in his top-five.
Kimes resisted the notion of ranking Shanahan above McVay, recognising that Clark likely placed a greater emphasis on a coach’s resume than she did. In her estimation, Shanahan occupies an elevated position relative to McVay.
According to Kimes, “If I were to construct a team from the ground up, I would prefer Kyle Shanahan to all but eight quarterbacks in the NFL.” “This is an utterly bizarre statement to make about a coach, and I do not hold the same opinion of any of the other coaches on this list, with the exception of Reid.”
