ROB Edwards is likely to depart Middlesbrough after being reluctantly granted permission to meet with Wolves.
Middlesbrough F.C. issue ‘disappointment’ statement as Rob Edwards linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. and Birmingham City F.C. plan confirmed
Middlesbrough have confirmed that head coach Rob Edwards has been given permission to enter talks with Wolverhampton Wanderers over their vacant managerial post — and the club made clear their disappointment in his decision.
In a formal statement the club said:
> “Middlesbrough Football Club have, subject to the completion of an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C., given head coach Rob Edwards permission to speak to Wolves. We initially rejected an approach from Wolves on the basis that Rob signed a three‑year contract with MFC less than six months ago. Following discussions with Rob we were disappointed to learn that he wanted to speak with Wolves regarding their head coach vacancy. We have now agreed terms with Wolves, subject to completion of the relevant paperwork.”
What’s happened so far
Edwards signed a three‑year deal at Middlesbrough in June but was approached by Wolves less than six months into the contract.
Middlesbrough initially rejected the approach from Wolves.
Edwards later expressed willingness to speak to Wolves, prompting Middlesbrough to approve talks, albeit reluctantly.
Ahead of their match against Birmingham City, Middlesbrough stood Edwards down from his duties: he missed a training session, the pre‑match press conference was cancelled, and his assistants took charge.
Middlesbrough claim possible breaches of Premier League regulations by Wolves in the approach.
What it means
For Middlesbrough it’s a major disruption: their manager, who joined only recently on a long‑term contract, is now potentially departing. The “disappointment” language shows the club feel let down.
For Wolves, they appear increasingly confident in landing Edwards, who has a prior relationship with the club — as player and coach — making him a credible candidate.
For Birmingham City, the confirmed plan sees Middlesbrough facing them without their usual head coach in the dugout, which could alter the dynamics of that match.
