According to the PA news agency, Wolves’ formal invitation to speak with Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards was rejected.

Edwards has emerged as the top candidate to take over at the Premier League’s worst team after Vitor Pereira was fired last Sunday after eight defeats in their first ten games.

Wolves explored the vacant role with former manager Gary O’Neill, who later withdrew from the process. That led them to their former player Edwards, who took over as Boro manager in June and signed a three-year contract following Michael Carrick’s firing.

Wolves are said to have contacted Boro, who are now third in the Championship, but a request to meet with Edwards has been denied. From 2004 until 2008, Edwards made over 100 playing appearances for Wolves and then joined the club’s coaching staff.

The 42-year-old refused to comment on reports connecting him to Molineux before of Middlesbrough’s Sky Bet Championship encounter against Leicester on Tuesday.

He responded: “My full focus is on this job here, which is a brilliant job, and trying to turn things around.” Speculation is difficult for me to remark on. I never get drawn to hypotheticals, and I don’t want to be drawn to them.

“I enjoy being Middlesbrough manager, and that is what I want to worry about. All I can say is that I haven’t given it a single thought because my attention is solely on this. It’s everything my daughter was telling me about.

Edwards’ most famous managing feat was guiding Luton to promotion to the Premier League in 2023. He has also been in charge of Forest Green and Watford.
