The Premier League clarifies two contentious penalty decisions involving Liverpool as the referee is replaced.
The Premier League has made remarks addressing the penalty disagreements that occurred during the match between Liverpool and Brentford.
Cody Gakpo tumbled to the ground in the last stages of the second half, but Liverpool was denied a penalty, allowing Brentford to extend their advantage shortly thereafter.
The Premier League has explained why Liverpool was not awarded a penalty after Cody Gakpo went down in the box during their encounter against Brentford.
Gakpo collapsed in the last minutes of the first half, but replays showed little to no contact with the Liverpool player, forcing the Premier League to clarify the referee’s decision.
A notification from the Premier League Match Center on X read: “The referee’s decision not to award a penalty to Liverpool was reviewed and upheld by VAR, concluding that Collins did not foul Gakpo.”
Following the altercation with Gakpo, Kevin Schade increased Brentford’s lead by profiting on a through pass, running past Ibrahima Konate, and finishing beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Milos Kerkez scored a goal deep into injury time in the first half, and it was later announced at halftime that referee Simon Hooper had sustained an injury, forcing Tim Robinson to take over for the second half.
The issue continued after halftime, when Brentford was granted a penalty in the second half after Virgil van Dijk challenged Dango Outtara.
Replacement referee Robinson first signaled for a free kick, but the video assistant referee intervened to clarify that the foul occurred on the boundary of the penalty area.
Igor Tiago then converted the penalty, restoring Brentford’s two-goal lead.
