Chelsea’s strong momentum came to an abrupt stop with a defeat to Sunderland. The encounter began well, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring his first goal for the team, but things quickly deteriorated.
Despite possessing the majority of the ball, Chelsea struggled to challenge Sunderland’s assault. The Blues struggled to break through their solid defensive system, which was exacerbated by the absence of Cole Palmer’s creative spark and scoring ability.
Chelsea’s defense was susceptible throughout the contest. They failed to control a lengthy throw-in, allowing Sunderland to level. During fast transitions, only Josh Acheampong had the speed and technical ability to protect the defense.
This made Enzo Maresca’s change of Tosin Adarabioyo for Acheampong a key blunder, as evidenced by Chelsea conceding the winning goal in stoppage time.
**Enzo Maresca criticised for tactical blunder in Chelsea defeat**
Sunderland counter-attacked with a long ball forward, and Tosin failed to defend properly against the striker in the penalty area. For several seconds, he did not apply lateral pressure to the player or try a challenge.
This passive defending enabled the Sunderland attacker to pass to his onrushing teammate, who confidently finished past the Chelsea goalie. Supporters were unmistakably frustrated.
One Chelsea fan wrote, “Substituting Josh, who was protecting us during the transition, with Tosin (ineffective in one-on-one situations), deserved that result.” Either Josh was harmed, or it was a bad decision.
While Tosin is Chelsea’s most seasoned defender, experience does not ensure success. Acheampong was playing well and should not have been removed unless there was an unreported injury.
Chelsea’s effort appears to be failing. Currently, they do not appear capable of securing a Champions League spot, which should be their baseline goal.
Despite Maresca’s significant injury absences, his side should be strong enough to defeat Sunderland at home.
