Kris Boyd faces stinging Celtic fan criticism of Kevin Muscat as Rangers hero forced into next boss fess up

The Shanghai Port manager is the overwhelming favourite for the Ibrox hot seat after Danny Rohl pulled out of the running.

Kris Boyd, who is concerned, acknowledges he cannot guarantee Kevin Muscat, Rangers’ next manager, is not a “poor man’s Ange Postecoglou”.

According to Record Sport, the Shanghai Port chief appears to be on the approach of replacing Russell Martin as manager at Ibrox.

The former Light Blues midfielder has begun contract negotiations with the club’s American owners, with Neil McCann set to take over as interim manager until Muscat arrives from China.

Danny Rohl, former Sheffield Wednesday manager, wowed Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe during meetings last week, but has now dropped out of the competition.

With Muscat now likely to be the only man remaining, he has been compared to former Celtic manager Postecoglou.

He replaced the Treble-winning Parkhead manager in the Melbourne Victory dugout in 2013, and will replace Postecoglou at Yokohama F. Marinos in 2021.

When asked on Sky Sports about “Celtic fans saying, ‘he’s a poor man’s Ange Postecoglou,'” Rangers hero Boyd admitted: “That remains to be seen.”

“Celtic achieved success with Ange Postecoglou when he arrived in Scottish football, and this is a similar road.

“It does not ensure that Kevin Muscat would be successful at Rangers if he is hired.

“How Ange Postecoglou controlled Celtic. The way he got his team to play was thrilling. The Celtics fans adored it. He brought that over into the English Premier League, beginning with Tottenham Hotspur, and it has kind of faded since.

“Rangers fans are hoping, if it’s Muscat, he can have the same success that Ange Postecoglou did.”
