Man Utd Ready to Re-Sign Player Erik Ten Hag Let Go for Just £9m

He has since matured into a reliable Premier League player for a top-half club.

A former Manchester United player is drawing interest from the club, despite leaving for under £9 million during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Ten Hag spent two and a half years at United from April 2022 to October 2024, winning the League Cup and FA Cup but failing to win the Premier League, which led to his dismissal before being replaced by Ruben Amorim in the autumn of 2024.

The Dutchman has subsequently led Bundesliga team Bayern Leverkusen, although he was fired after only three games in September.

A year after Ten Hag was fired by United, some of his recruits, notably custodian Andre Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, and Antony, have left.

Meanwhile, Mason Mount has failed to establish himself at the club, with Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez likely the best of the lot. Christian Eriksen and Jonny Evans both joined United under Ten Hag but were released when their contracts expired at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Several players left after Ten Hag joined United, including Cristiano Ronaldo, but there was another less-publicized departure that caused a stir among the most ardent United fans at the time.

Following Ten Hag’s arrival in the summer of 2022, many clips of him giving instruction to midfielder James Garner circulated on social media, prompting speculation that he could be part of the Dutchman’s plans.

Garner did, however, move for Premier League rivals Everton for an estimated £9 million that summer. Since then, he has made 93 appearances for the Toffees, putting in numerous standout displays despite being asked to play out of position as a full-back on occasion.

This season, Everton is presently ninth in the league, and he has cut a confident figure alongside summer arrivals Jack Grealish and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, swiftly becoming one of David Moyes’ first names on the team sheet.

But could he go back to Old Trafford?

According to United in Focus, the club is ‘exploring the conditions’ for his return, since the midfielder’s Everton contract is slated to end in the summer of 2026.

According to transfer insider Graeme Bailey, United are aware of James Garner’s condition; they always keep an eye on academy graduates, and he is performing exceptionally well. I’m informed he performed well in recruitment department reports.”

Bailey also reported that Everton is eager to offer the midfielder a new contract, eliminating the potential of Garner departing for free. It is uncertain whether the player intends to resign with United.

James Garner on Man United’s exit
Moving on from United appears to be the right move for the midfielder, as he has subsequently acquired first-team experience with a solid Premier League side. But why did he depart the Red Devils in 2022?

He discussed the deal in a September 2023 interview with BBC Sport.

“When I came back to United, I felt like I had a good enough season to have a shot,” Garner told me.

“Unfortunately, I was injured on the first day, which pushed me back two or three weeks, so the manager did not see me in training or games.

“After playing two seasons of men’s football, I decided that I wanted to be a part of a team and squad, ideally starting. I knew I wasn’t going to receive that at United, so I decided to move here.

“I could have gone on loan again and returned, but I thought I’d be in the same position I was in before. I didn’t want to get mired in the mud; I needed to make the difficult decision to quit one of the world’s best clubs, which I am glad I did.”
