Celtic veteran Chris Sutton has a talent for energising Rangers fans, though they frequently make it easy for him.
The Ibrox side has already had a turbulent and somewhat hilarious season. Following Russell Martin’s dismissal as manager, speculation rapidly spread regarding Steven Gerrard’s surprise return. Despite reports of talks this week and euphoria among Rangers fans, many outlets have now revealed that Gerrard has decided not to return the club.
From a Celtic perspective, it’s difficult not to laugh—Rangers truly are the gift that keeps on giving.
Celtic, meanwhile, have maintained their domestic dominance for nearly two decades, just losing out on a treble last season. Rangers, on the other hand, spent heavily over the summer in the hopes of bridging the gap under Martin, only for their plans to fail miserably and leave them battling near the bottom of the table.
Sutton responded to Gerrard’s snub on social media, tweeting, “He’s assessed the squad…” — a light-hearted remark regarding Gerrard’s decision.
While Rangers continue to replace managers without winning a trophy, Celtic remain solid under Brendan Rodgers. However, this could alter next summer. Rodgers’ contract expires in 2026, but considering the occasionally tense relationship between him and the board, many believe his exit is imminent.
Former manager Ange Postecoglou, who is now under pressure at Nottingham Forest having being fired by Tottenham earlier this year, could also be a candidate to return. Postecoglou, like Rodgers before him, would be warmly welcomed back to Celtic Park if the club’s current condition remained the same.
