Heartbreaking News Celtic supporter John Burns Confirmed death after being hit by multiple cars on M6, inquest hears

John Burns died after being hit by numerous cars while stepping off a Celtic supporters bus near Carlisle.

An inquest heard how a young father died after being hit by multiple cars on the M6 in Cumbria.

John Burns was murdered on the northbound carriageway near Junction 42 south of Carlisle on September 14, 2018.

On Thursday, the Cockermouth Coroner’s Court held an inquiry into his death.

The court heard that the 23-year-old was a regular at Celtic Park and would generally take a taxi back to his father’s house in Glasgow after games.

Instead, on the evening of September 14, he got on a Celtic supporters bus bound for Blackburn. The father-of-one spent nearly two hours on the coach before getting off in Carlisle.

Passengers on the supporters’ bus reported he had boarded with the idea of going out in Preston, but after being informed he would be better off getting off at Carlisle to return home, he departed with four other passengers near the J42 slip road, which was a common drop-off point for the bus.

He was last spotted on the supporters’ bus, resting on a safety railing and using his phone. They informed the inquiry that they believed he was waiting for a trip back to Glasgow.

Minutes later, he was seen attempting to draw the attention of traffic on a nearby motorway roundabout by deliberately impeding their path.

A motorist driving with his little granddaughter who believed he was under the influence did not stop and instead contacted the police.

The court heard that John then walked down to the northbound carriageway of the M6 and was hit by three automobiles within minutes of his last sighting.

John’s mother hailed him as a “good partner and daddy” and “a Celtic fan through and through” in a statement.

He was characterised as a caring and devoted friend, as well as a gentle spirit, and he will be deeply missed.

Coroner Margaret Taylor called “a very tragic death of a young man” in her closing remarks.
