Chelsea are “crying out” for a player like Harry Kane, according to a former Blues player, who believes it “makes sense” for the striker to join Enzo Maresca’s team if he leaves Bayern Munich.
Kane, who has a release clause in his contract with Bayern that allows him to depart for £54 million in January, has been linked with a transfer away from the German champions.
Al Hilal, a Saudi Pro League club, has recently expressed interest in the striker, but Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has stated that he would want to see him return to England.
However, the 32-year-old said his enthusiasm in returning had waned. “In terms of staying longer (at Bayern), I could definitely see that,” he remarked while on international duty for England.
“I stated frankly a few weeks ago that I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet, but if they do arise, I am willing to talk and have an honest chat.
“Clearly, everything depends on how the next year or so goes and what we do together. Right now, I would say we are in a terrific situation, and I am not worrying about anything else.”

He continued, “In terms of the Premier League, I’m not sure. If you had asked me when I originally left to go to Bayern, I would have replied I would definitely come back. Now that I’ve lived there for a few years, I’d say the price has dropped little, but I wouldn’t say I’d never go back.
Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has recommended Kane to join the club amid doubts about his future.
The 41-year-old, who spent four seasons with the Blues from 2003 to 2007, believes it would make sense. “I think if Harry Kane is ready to come back to the Premier League, it’s Chelsea who should make the move for him,” according to him.
“They’re certainly looking for that type of player, given the way they play. They’re more interested in a centre striker, and Arsenal would probably play too much tiki-taka to be the proper fit for him.
“Liverpool have Alexander Isak and Manchester City have [Erling] Haaland, so Chelsea makes the most sense if he leaves Bayern Munich.”
Spurs maintain a first-choice agreement for Kane as part of the 2023 transfer deal with Bayern, but Johnson believes England’s all-time leading scorer should avoid a return to the North London club.
“I do not think Harry Kane would want to return to Tottenham. “I believe that story is over for him and the club,” he said.
“He departed with a reason: to go win trophies. He won’t be able to accomplish that at Spurs if he returns, so why would he come back now? I don’t think that makes sense for Kane; it would be like returning back to a blazing fireworks. It might blow up in his face. The situation is what it is, and he should continue to advance in his career.
