Manchester United has made a definitive decision on whether to fire manager Ruben Amorim if they lose against Sunderland this weekend, according to a fresh report.
On Saturday afternoon, United will welcome Sunderland at Old Trafford.
They have seven points from six Premier League games and 11 goals surrendered.
Last Saturday, Amorim’s side fell 3-1 against Brentford, putting even more pressure on the Portuguese manager.
After the game, BBC Sport’s Simon Stone stated that United had not yet decided to fire Amorim, with minority co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe eager to give him more time.
In the days since, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola, and Fulham’s Marco Silva have been mentioned as potential successors to Amorim.
While the thought of facing a freshly promoted team at home would ordinarily provide genuine hope for United, Sunderland recruited well in the summer and are presently fifth after a strong start to the season under Regis Le Bris.
They triumphed at Nottingham Forest on Saturday and have home victories against Brentford and West Ham.
The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell has now confirmed prior claims that Amorim will not be fired regardless of the outcome at Old Trafford this weekend.
That is despite the fact that a defeat could drop United to as low as 16th in the rankings if other results go against them.
“I think it’s a big match, and I know Ruben Amorim wants a good outcome. “They must defeat Sunderland,” Whitwell remarked on the ‘Talk of the Devils’ podcast.
“According to what I’ve heard, even if they lose to Sunderland, Ruben Amorim’s career is far from over.
“Sir Jim Ratcliffe is the ultimate decision-maker on this. I know he will consider ideas from Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, and the Glazers will undoubtedly have an opinion on this. I imagine Joel Glazer will have an opinion.
“But it is up to Ratcliffe to make the decision. And I’m told he wants to give Amorim a whole season because, in some ways, it’s a fresh group and he wants to spread his methods even further. We can discuss whether or not it was the right decision, but that is the message from the top.”
