Brendan Rodgers’ side produced numerous chances but failed to make a breakthrough, with Hibs sitting deep and defending in numbers.
Kelechi Iheanacho squandered two great chances, and Johnny Kenny failed to convert a late header that would have sealed the win.
Controversy erupted when BBC analysts Pat Bonner and Derek Ferguson pointed out a probable handball by Jordan Obita in the Hibs box that appeared to go missed by VAR.
Bonner remarked that Obita’s arm appeared raised as he blocked a Tony Ralston cross, and Ferguson agreed, implying that it could have been a penalty. Despite Celtic’s efforts, the VAR did not interfere.
Aside from that moment, Celtic’s deficiencies determined the outcome. Wasteful finishing and a lack of poise in front of goal, rather than VAR, cost them the victory.
On another day, the identical performance may have easily resulted in a 3-0 win.
Rodgers will now urge his team to be more clinical when SC Braga visits on Thursday night, with Europa League qualifying on the line.
