Rangers Next Manager: Huge Names Among 25 Favourites to Replace Russell Martin

After Rangers’ 1-0 Europa League loss to Genk on Thursday, the odds for their future manager have been revealed. Four victories in his first 14 games indicate that the sand is dropping out of the hourglass at an alarming rate, and Russell Martin’s reign is starting to seem like a ticking time bomb as the former Southampton manager feels the pressure building in the Ibrox dugout.

To make matters worse, the Scottish Premiership campaign has gotten off to a historically bad start under his well-intentioned leadership. Rangers have only four points out of a possible fifteen after their first five league games, with zero victories, four draws, and one loss. Given that this is their poorest league season start in forty-seven years and that SportsCasting has released odds for the top 25 candidates to succeed Martin, a change in leadership may be imminent.

Odds for Rangers’ Next Manager

16/1 for Jesse Marsch

To put it mildly, Jesse Marsch’s tenure at Leeds United from 2022 to 2023 was brief. Although he led the Lilywhites to their first victory at Anfield since 2001, he still knows very little about European and British football. He has only managed on this side of the Atlantic throughout his spell at Elland Road.

With fewer than ten months until the World Cup, he is currently Canada’s head coach, therefore it would be foolish for him to be approached by suitors.

Graham Potter (16/1)

West Ham has only won one of their first five games in all competitions, and after four Premier League defeats, they are in 19th in the standings, second from the bottom and only ahead of Wolves. It would truly be a case of “out of the frying pan and into the fire” if Graham Potter decided to leave Rangers and join them. Which role—his old one or his possible new one—would be more toxic?

It would feel like a backward move from the outside looking in for the 55-time Scottish champions to fire a struggling manager and then sign one who now appears to be getting on in years.

16/1 for Gareth Southgate
Gareth Southgate has been unemployed since England lost in the European Championship final for the second time in a row last summer. But there’s no denying that he adds a positive element to any team in world football, something Rangers seem to have forgotten about lately.

Rangers would need to move quickly to pitch their project to one of the Three Lions’ all-time greats if they were to have any chance of luring him back into management. He is a highly sought-after head coach, and teams like Manchester United are always circling in between their unsuccessful experiments at Old Trafford.

14/1 Ralph Hasenhuttl
Ralph Hasenhuttl, who has been out of a job since a run of eight Bundesliga games without a win with VfL Wolfsburg in May, is well-known for his high-pressing, aggressive style of football, which has earned him the moniker “Alpine Klopp” due to its intensity and emphasis on rapid transitions. Rangers’ young team might benefit from his signature gegenpressing approach, which is based on aggressive ball retrieval high up the pitch.

According to sources, the Rangers administration has been receptive to the idea of hiring another former Southampton manager, given his history of exceeding expectations. Hasenhuttl’s ability to operate on a shoestring and make the most of the resources available to him could result in quick improvements at Ibrox.

Marco Rose (12/1)
Marco Rose turned a youthful and unimpressive RB Salzburg team into a European dark horse between 2017 and 2019, leading them to two Austrian league championships and a Europa League semifinal. He offers Rangers’ new ownership an enticing alternative with his track record in Europe.

10/1 Nuno Espirito Santo
Nuno Espírito Santo would probably still be in a high-ranking Premier League position, guiding the Tricky Trees into their first European campaign in almost thirty years, if it weren’t for Nottingham Forest’s impulsive, trigger-happy ownership.

Nuno did a fantastic job at the City Ground, so any team that can sign him would be lucky. It is unclear if the Ibrox project aligns with his own goals, though, as a move to Rangers would be a major step down for him.

Danny Rohl (8/1)
Danny Rohl is a unicorn for overachieving on tight budgets because of his quick ascent at the age of 36, which was refined by renowned mentors like Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann. He is a realistic target because of his availability since leaving Sheffield Wednesday in late July 2025, during the club’s ownership issues. However, the fact that this would only be his second managing position indicates that there is a high risk, high return potential.

6/1 Kevin Muscat
When Gers supporters talk about the next manager, Kevin Muscat, who played at Rangers from 2002 to 2003, frequently comes up. He is presently the 6/1 third favourite for the position and the only football player ever judged too violent to play in the Old Firm derby.

After successful stints in Australia and Japan, he currently manages Shanghai Port in China’s Super League and enjoys a solid reputation. Before the Rangers chose Belgian Philippe Clement, Muscat is thought to have been on the final shortlist for the position last year.

4/1 for Steven Gerrard
The second-choice candidate to succeed Martin is former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, who oversaw the team from 2018 to 2021 before joining Aston Villa. This is possibly the most logical choice.

The legendary Liverpool player most recently served as head coach of Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia for 18 months, ending in late January. Gerrard is still the last manager to win the league title at Ibrox, having done it in 2021 while he was at Rangers. With 102 points and just 13 goals given up in the league, he led Rangers to back-to-back derby wins over Celtic and led them to the championship without dropping a single match.

Sean Dyche’s 2/1 Route-One football may not be what Ibrox fans would want to see from their team, but it might be just what they need during these difficult times.

Prior to his time at Everton, when the gravel-voiced manager was frequently involved in relegation struggles, Sean Dyche established himself at Watford and then at Burnley, where he brought the team to Europa League football in spite of all odds over a ten-year run from 2012 to 2022. Although his style of play may not be visually appealing, it is brutally effective in producing outcomes. Below are the complete odds for Rangers’ next manager:
