Although Sergio Ramos is accustomed to being in the spotlight, the Monterrey captain made headlines last week for all the wrong reasons. The Spanish defender tried a daring Panenka penalty in a Liga MX match against Toluca, but it was easily saved. Monterrey lost badly, 6–2, after what should have been a game-changing moment instead caused a collapse.
Germán Berterame gave Monterrey the lead within the first ten minutes, and they got off to a strong start. Ramos appeared to have a chance to increase the lead and put Toluca on the ropes when he went up to take a penalty shortly after.
Nevertheless, Ramos chose the bold Panenka over placement or power. But Hugo González, the custodian for Toluca, read the attempt flawlessly. He shifted the match’s momentum immediately, stood tall, and easily grabbed the tame chip.
Ramos’ blunder turned out to be a pivotal moment. In just fifteen minutes, Toluca completely changed the course of events with goals from Paulinho, Nicolás Castro, and Jesús Angulo. Monterrey was inconsolable at the break, and things only got worse in the second half as Toluca scored more goals to secure an unexpected 6–2 victory.
Domènec Torrent, the coach of Monterrey, acknowledged that the penalty miss was the turning point.
“We had a great start to the game, dominating early and creating opportunities. However, everything changed following that penalty.
Antonio Mohamed, the manager of Toluca, later admitted that he had forewarned González prior to kickoff of Ramos’ propensity to attempt Panenka penalties, further inflaming the situation. “We looked at Ramos. I advised Hugo to wait for the chip and not go in too soon. After the game, Mohamed clarified, “He was prepared for it.”
It was a tactical masterstroke that paid off in the most embarrassing fashion for Monterrey’s captain.
The miss was particularly striking because Ramos has been one of football’s most reliable penalty-takers. He hadn’t failed on the spot since November 2020, in fact. That four-year streak ended with a thud, and the veteran admitted afterward that he “has to take responsibility” for the costly moment.
Social media, meanwhile, lit up with criticism and memes. Many compared the error to Lionel Messi’s recent Panenka miss with Inter Miami, noting that even the game’s biggest stars can fall victim to the high-risk, high-reward penalty style.
Ramos saw this as a captain’s gambit that went horribly wrong, not just a missed penalty. Instead of motivating his group, it made room for Toluca’s vicious retaliation. There are significant concerns regarding Monterrey’s commitment and leadership going into the next stage of the season after their crushing loss.
The Panenka is a confident and stylish move. However, as Ramos recently learnt, when it fails, the consequences can be severe. In this instance, it not only cost Monterrey a goal but also ended the game.
