Liverpool rejected swap deal for €70m star that included Federico Chiesa

Chiesa is expected to stay at Anfield this summer, despite interest from rival clubs.

Liverpool reportedly rejected an audacious’swap’ deal in which Federico Chiesa would have left the club.

Following a protracted transfer controversy this summer, the Reds have agreed to pay £125 million to capture Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.

They are also close to making a £35 million bid for Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who is in his final year of contract.

The Reds have spent heavily this summer, with their £105 million signing for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen nearly breaking the British transfer record, which will now be broken by the Isak deal.

They have also signed Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, and Giovanni Leoni, bringing their total spending to far over £300 million.

This amount has been offset by some sales, with Jarell Quansah, Luis Diaz, Ben Gannon Doak, and Darwin Nunez all leaving the club.

Arne Slot’s side has amassed over £150 million in sales, which explains why they have been able to spend so much money on the forthcoming direction.

However, they did strike an audacious agreement that would have seen Chiesa depart the club.

According to Lewis Steele of the Daily Mail, Liverpool rejected down AC Milan’s interest in Chiesa earlier this transfer window.

That deal would have marked the Italy international winger’s return to Serie A after spells with Juventus and Fiorentina.

Steele adds that Liverpool was offered Rafael Leao by Milan but elected not to sign the Portuguese international.

In effect, the transfer would have been a swap between the 2005 and 2007 Champions League finalists.

The club will now focus only on completing a deal for Guehi, with Crystal Palace still looking for a replacement after their loan agreement for Brighton defender Igor fell through.
