Alexander Isak Could be ‘Banned’ From Touching ‘This is Anfield’ Sign at Liverpool

Alexander Isak may be barred from performing a very specific ceremony at Liverpool despite being on the cusp of completing his British record transfer to Anfield. The controversy surrounding the Swedish striker has rumbled on throughout the summer window, but it came to an end on deadline day, when an agreement was reached to allow Isak to complete his dream move after weeks of protesting Newcastle’s reluctance.

Isak is anticipated to make an immediate impact and play an important role in the Reds’ successful defence of their Premier League title. However, the 25-year-old will be forbidden from accomplishing one thing, even if it is not to win trophies with his new team.

Why Isak May Be Banned From Touching the ‘This is Anfield’ Sign

It has become customary for many Reds players over the years to touch the ‘This is Anfield’ sign that hangs above the tunnel when the XI walks out onto the pitch before many a crucial match. However, an ancient regulation set by a previous manager may mean that the former Real Sociedad player will have to wait for his turn to touch it.

During his tenure at Liverpool, former manager Jurgen Klopp implemented a protocol that prohibited players who had not won a trophy in the renowned red shirt from touching the sign as they made their way out onto the hallowed ground.

The German explained his stance at the time, saying: “I’ve advised my players not to touch the ‘This Is Anfield’ sign until they win something! It is a symbol of respect. I touched it while I was Borussia Dortmund’s manager, but we lost 4-0.

It’s unclear whether that regulation still applies under Arne Slot, but if it does, Isak will have to wait patiently for his opportunity.

Of course, the Swede was on hand to score against Liverpool in last season’s Carabao Cup final, and his goal was key in Newcastle breaking their seven-decade trophy drought.

The same competition will present Isak with his first opportunity at silverware for his new team, with the final taking place on March 22nd, 2026.
